Basic outdoors pants. In my experience, they are not as durable as climbing pants. I have a $50 pair of Prana climbing pants that I've used for climbing, but also every single other outdoors activity (caving, backpacking, etc) They are my rough and tumble pants that have taken quite a beating and still keep going after 5 years so far. https://www.amazon.com/prAna-M4ST32116-BLK-36-Stretch-Zion-Pant/dp/B018KOWEE2

Like most others, I would overheat in rain pants, even the most breathable ones. Then I'm soaked from sweat, so dedicated rain pants don't have much to offer me.

Instead of trying to stay dry, I prefer quick-drying. My favorite for commuting are the Prana Zions. Even when thoroughly soaked, they dry out quickly. They've got a light DWR coating on them to keep you dry if it's just sprinkling, a gusseted inseam so your taint ain't sitting on a seam, and they've got snaps to keep the bottoms of your pant legs rolled up.

They're spendy, but if you look around you can find them cheaper, or if you're able to score a pass to the Columbia store, you can get them cheap there.
