You don't NEED it, but it's definitely worth the investment! Especially since there are about 10+ PSVR games that support the controller right now (see below). It definitely makes the game MUCH more immersive. You can even aim the gun around corners for blindfire, which feels incredibly intuitive and really gives you the sense of realism.
