After breaking one too many paint bottles using pliers (Oh look, everything is yellow now ಠ_ಠ), I found that one of these style strap wrenches works much better for opening stuck lids since it squeezes equally around the lid rather than at two points. I got a set of two at a local dollar store for a couple of bucks and keep one at my modeling bench and one in the kitchen.

You can also try punching the end cap with two screw drivers on opposite sides of the center and then turning it (like how a slotted screw works).

Also you can try to spray it with brake clean then you a pair of leather gloves and you might have enough friction to get it off.
