I'm not sure that it's about the aluminum, so much as the USB 3.1 gen 2. I just know this is one of the better enclosures that I've been watching for a while -- the black color has been sitting at $60 and the silver at $50.

The MyDigitalSSD M2X is the other highly regarded enclosure, which is the same price, but I have that one and it has a really dumb design where the thermal pad doesn't necessarily make contact with both the SSD and the case...

This Sabrent model is made by a reputable manufacturer and has by far the best reviews on Amazon

That adapter will NOT work, the drive is a PCIe NVMe SSD. That one only supports SATA drives.

That enclosure you linked doesn't support PCI-E drives, only SATA M.2 drives, if he is using PCI-E SSDs he needs something like this one

As for cloning software, I can recommend macrium reflect, works will with SSDs and Windows and you don't need the paid version to clone disks.

Or alternatively you could just use Microsoft's media creation tool to create a bootable Win10 USB and clean install Windows 10, then use Lenovo Vantage to setup all your drivers. That's the way I would do it.

Good plan with the ram, I just don't have another machine to put it in.

No issues in my desktop for at least a month and was using this drive between desktop and Macbook without issues

You're still going to pay about $50-100 over the going rate for an SSD to get an external one. 2TB SSDs start around $200, and combined units cost $250+. I'd go with a company with known SSD lines such as Samsung, Sandisk, Western Digital, etc. They are probably using a variant of an existing drive they sell in the enclosures.

Or you can spend $20-50 on an enclosure and a drive and build your own, the upside being that you have more options on the drive inside, the downside being more wasted packaging and probably a less compact size (unless you go m.2) these are the brands amazon sells I'd recommend:

the Enclosure I got was a Sabrent so I just went ahead and got the same NVMe with it. I'm sure any would work though. Crucial has one for $99 that tops out at 2000MB/s which is more than the enclosure would see anyway, so there's a place to save money too.

Looks like it went up in price a little bit, I got mine for $35 at the time. but the total is looking like $164 for a 1TB which is still cheaper and faster than T5

Its been a while since I've looked at them because mine works so well, but there's this too, looks prebuilt with the parts I linked to and uses their new enclosure which doesn't require a screwdriver, I might pick up one these up too. $150 for 1TB is pretty decent.

Quite true. Should be fine in a M.2-to-PCIe adapter or USB enclosure (albeit limited to 10 Gbps in the latter case, realistically), or even in a 2x M.2 socket as it will still get those all-important writes if it's used effectively.

I would recommend getting an nvme drive with an nvme enclosure. I personally have a sabrent rocket nvme drive with a sabrent nvme enclosure. Comes out to be $100
