Step 0: Obtain a 2016 (model SM-R323) GearVR. The 2017 model will work too as it has the same lens but the 2016 is generally cheaper to purchase. The 2015 model has different lens and won't work with the adapter.

Print two copies (just the adapterV3_2.stl file one for each eye) of adapter. If you don't have a printer you can use a service like 3D hubs. When choosing your print type pick PLA and resolution of 200 μm (or better). You can sort the list of printers by location and often find a local printer in order to get it faster and avoid the shipping fee.

Step 1: Remove GearVR lens. Refer to ifix it tear down guide for step by step instructions. You can also use this video for most of it. However, that's a different model GearVR so the actual last step is slightly different.

Step2: Remove Vive lens

Step3: Insert adapter without the GearVR lens attached.

Step4: Remove any dust/debris from screens. Shine a flashlight into the adapter hole and you'll be able to see if there is anything on the screens. Use a can of compressed air and a lens cleaning rag to remove dust/debris from display.

Step5: Clean the GearVR lens one last time and insert them into the adapter. The curved side should go down towards the display.

Step 6: (Optional) Update pre lens distortion settings more tuned for the GearVR lens using this guide


EDIT: Right now the adapters are still being refined and the lens distortion settings aren't very accurate and just tweaked by trial and error. Once we iron out all the details and finalize a good design I'm sure somebody (maybe even myself) will make a video tutorial on the entire process.

I noticed in one of the original threads that someone had posted that it was the Gear VR 2016 model that needed to be used (it appears that the lenses are different between the 2015 and 2016 models).

In addition, I found a seller on Amazon who has the Gear VR 2016 International Version for $15.99 with free shipping. After some preliminary research, it doesn't seem that there is much difference in the hardware, I figured that they wouldn't change the lenses on that model either.
