Found it strange how some people are saying USB-C drives are "expensive". Yes, please tell me more about how a 128gig drive which costs less than forty bucks is "almost as expensive as a CFast card"!

And heck, if you're just doing a basic shot on a tripod that is running for ages (say a locked off shot at an event) you could get a FOUR TERABYTE harddrive for less than US$170:

This is indeed a major feature by BMD!

Switching from Google to Microsoft is like going from diarrhea to vomit. If your privacy is worth half a shit to you just get a USB stick for your keychain, these dual USB-A and USB-C ones are nifty. If you have to get cloud storage iCloud probably is the most trustworthy one.

Hey u/google_drive_fan11,

This Sandisk seems to have some okay reviews, and those bad ones were contacted by Sandisk support. But I agree with you, the lack of true high quality USB-C 3.1 gen 2 drives is a shame, hopefully if people like you and me buy more USB-C flash drives, the manufacturers will respond to the demand.

That said, If you do get a USB-C drive I'm sure the community here would appreciate a review or any comparisons you can make.

One useful note. While you cant extend the pixel's storage, you can still get USB dangles that can be plugged in relatively easily. It's not perfect, but it's useful for transferring large files on and off, if required outside good signal areas.

I'm not sure if it is the update or the new drive I bought but I have not had it fail for a week now. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01EZ0X55C?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_pd_title

Edit: As a test I plugged in my old USB drive that failed after everytime driving the car. I am on 42.3 and it is still working after almost 24 hours and multiple short trips around town. so it looks like they may have fixed the issue with the new update.

  1. I don't see why not - Yubikey supports A and NFC concurrently, and USB C is still USB, just with a different interface. I mean, you could hack it in via duplicating the USB A channels & pipe one of them into a USB A -> USB C adapter? You already have this in the form of flash drives - https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Ultra-128GB-Type-C-SDDDC2-128G-G46/dp/B01EZ0X55C

  2. I'd be sceptical. The packaging suggest that the usb cable is intended to only charge it - they have good reason to omit data lines in protecting key leakage (although you could potentially perform power analysis on it? i'm not sure!), so I can't imagine firmware updates could be done through that micro-usb port. Furthermore, it provides a reason for Google to sell more keys!

  3. I suppose the benefits would be down to the open source nature - theres less reason to suspect backdoors, + if a component on the board breaks (other than the memory of course), you could replace it without having to get a new auth token and pair it with all your existing services.

i had no issues using this drive https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Ultra-128GB-Type-C-SDDDC2-128G-G46/dp/B01EZ0X55C with a Samsung phone to clear out the corrupt files with the default usb browser that opens when plugging in with the usb-c side. Then just flip it back to usb-a and plug back in the car. If it helps, I'm also using this drive with a splitter sharing with the Nomad wireless charger as well as using the 2 partition method for using this one drive for dash cam + music.

Well see, this is the thing about the MBP's butterfly keyboard, it's like no other keyboard I've ever used before. The keys have a decent amount of space between them, at least for a laptop, but the keys themselves are so low, so flush to the case, I just don't get how dust/crumbs/etc actually even gets in under the keys tbh. Only way I can see stuff getting in is when you press the key, so you'd have to already have stuff laying on/around the key waiting to get in when you pressed it for something to get under the key.

It's not like a desktop keyboard where you drop something on it and it just disappears between the keys, you can easily wipe/blow off whatever you dropped on the keys off without having them suffer as long as you don't press the affected keys themselves and (obviously) whatever you dropped wasn't liquid. (I've had to do this, accidentally spilled some crumbs from morning toast on my keyboard very early on, was deathly scared I had just killed my keyboard but I just blew them off with a can of compressed air).

I too am using my MBP for programming and I love the keyboard. I sort of miss having an actual physical escape key and function keys, but I've slowly gotten over it. Don't mind having only C ports, got a sandisk dual flash drive one side C the other A, and a portable hub from alldongles.com and I'm totally set.

I'm not too sure if you're limited to what you can transfer to the USB. Right now I'm using this USB (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017DH3NOW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ivMBybBF4HMFQ) However if you like the idea and are willing to shell out an extra $30, this one is probably a better investment (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EZ0X55C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_hxMByb13J26FV)
Sorry for just the links and not hyperlinks, I'm on mobile right now.
