The Best Video Cards For Your Money: November 2011:

>Best Video Card for $700:

>Two Radeon HD 6970 2GB in Crossfire

>Offering performance close to two Geforce GTX 580 in SLI, while consuming close to 250W less at load, two Radeon HD 6970 in Crossfire are an excellent alternative to two Geforce GTX 580 in SLI.

>Best of all? Two Radeon HD 6970 will set you back $700, compared to $1000 for two Geforce GTX 580 in SLI.

Microstuttering is still an issue, but its less likely to be seen the better the video card. nvidia cards appear to be better at dealing it with it (sacrificing frame rates for smoother playback).

Take a look at this TechReport Article. It suggests measuring fps may not be the best way to compare the performance of video cards, especially in multi-gpu setups where stuttering can be an issue. But it also goes on to say that the 'stutters' seen in the measured frame time data isn't really noticed by the end user.

Sapphire makes quality cards at very nice price levels. Of all the cards I've looked at personally I found them to be the best value. A quick look around gave me higher prices on every other brand and I find their alternative cooling solutions to be unconvincing especially if they charge over $50 extra. Best deal I could find on the Sapphire 6970 is on Amazon, actually cheaper than NewEgg (on a lot of things lately by the way). Here you go :-)

Be sure to have a look around yourself but don't get taken in by all the superior cooling crap. The Sapphire won't melt ;-)
