I’ve been very happy with my reel mower. My lawn is uneven and has a hill, but it still works better than expected. It’s not good when you let your yard knee high, but otherwise is worth avoiding the motor maintenance and a gas can.

$140 a month? That is not cheap in my mind. 100 sq ft would take you 10 minutes with a push mechanical mower. You can just lean the mower up against the back of the house when you're done. Read the reviews, these things are actually pretty damn good for very small lawns. https://www.amazon.com/Scotts-2000-20-20-Inch-Classic-Mower/dp/B00004RA3E

https://www.amazon.com/Scotts-2000-20-20-Inch-Classic-Mower/dp/B00004RA3E Get something like this. Not at Amazon, this one is waaaaay more expensive than some. Go to a Tractor Supply shop or even your local Home Depot type store might have something like this. Go where the farmers go, though, and you will be able to get something that will work for probably less than $50.
These are called Push Reel mowers.

I've used a reel mower on a bigger yard than that for years and it's easy, as long as there are no hills. Of course it takes longer than a powered mower, but it feels like taking a walk, rather than doing a chore. The Scott 14 inch will be too small, but they also make a 20 inch.

The big disadvantage of reel mowers is that they don't work when the grass gets really long.

I am considering one when our free push mower dies. We have a large yard and I use a rider for most of it, but only a push for a small part. The only gas mower I'd consider is self propelled.

Something like this or this for a reel mower.

Yeah once every 3-4 weeks is pretty common in most of the US.

If the biggest problem is gas/maintenance, and you're a big burly guy who doesn't give a fuck about some exercise, look into grabbing a push reel lawn mower.

I have this kind of mower:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00004RA3E/ref=s9_top_hm_b4xSbNL_g86_i2

And no space to keep any other kind. It is perfectly sufficient to maw my lawn. However it will NOT much leaves.

How is it a waste of time to rake leaves?

I am going to chime in a few of my own too.

Manual things like hand food mixers and meat grinders.

Also the little hot water coils you used to drop in a coffee cup to instantly boil the water rather than using a microwave.

Oh and a home food garden.

can you imagine how much healthier americans would be if the old gasless push manual mowers were used more for small lawns not to mention the quieter neighborhoods?

EDIT: HAH ! They still sell them! http://www.amazon.com/Scotts-2000-20-20-Inch-Classic-Mower/dp/B00004RA3E Imagine how much faster and easier and less of a hassle these would be for so many tiny front yards and people really dont know the technology exists to mow a lawn without using gas or and electric mower.

I respect peoples personal choices on their impact of their surroundings. That respect covers whatever reason she has for doing this. I can't help but think it's the same principle as pre-engine mowers though. http://www.amazon.com/Scotts-2000-20-20-Inch-Classic-Mower/dp/B00004RA3E seems like it would be just fine.

Or those sweet ass looking old school reel mowers like this. No power at all!

That looks great. I've got a Scott 20" Classic, and it doesn't do very well around the edges of my raised beds. I don't like weed whackers so I've pretty much gotten used to the grass being higher around the railroad ties. How closely does that mower edge?
