If you're not in a hurry to buy one, I've gotten mine for $30 total (included shipping), on ebay, you just have to be vigilant in searching. Tales of the Abyss (in ebay once again) costs around $15-25 if you search around (not brand new and usually it's just the cartridge, but you'll save a lot if you're not picky).
I mainly save money because I don't care about the packaging/cases/bonus items since I buy just buy the games themselves. You can also check in the subpages of amazon for other sellers: https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B01EAIWW6M
Shin Megami Tensei IV and its sequel Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse. You may be familiar with the franchise already, the popular Persona 5 is a part of it.
My other big recommendation is Bravely Default, and its sequel Bravely Second. The combat is also the most impressive thing about the game, and its hard to explain, so try the free demo for either game on the eShop. If you do try the Demo, and beat it, it gives you a bonus if you play the full game. Both are fantastic games, and are throwbacks to classic Final Fantasy games of the NES and SNES era. If you do try either demo and beat it, it will unlock a bonus in its own full game.
This is as low as it has gotten on US Amazon according to camelcamelcamel.

So in the Shin Megami Tensei 'main series', Shin Megami Tensei IV (SMTIV) is the fourth game without any significant story ties to the other main series games.
In terms of SMTIV, there are two games: SMTIV the original game, and SMTIV Apocalypse, its sequel. The sequel involves some story elements from the original game, so you probably want to play the original game first.
Here's some basic info: both of them are turn-based RPGs, and the difficulty level is rather high compared to most of the other games on the 3DS. Especially the beginning of SMTIV. Be prepared to die, maybe often. Also, the story is pretty important in this series, so I would suggest playing them in order. The games are both very good, but Apocalypse might be slightly better? I think it's just personal preference. Either way, I'd play both.
