  1. If you want to start with modern spider-man, I'd suggest reading from either Brand New Day or Big Time, which is where Dann Slott (current writer) started his run. Of course you just can just jump on with Superior Spider-man, which is the current series with Doc Ock in Peter's body being Spider-man (this took place at the end of amazing spider-man with the Dying Wish arc. The series is currently 20 issues in, so there's not as much catch-up. There's also Ultimate Spider-man that takes place in an alternate marvel universe that is also really good and has less continuity issues and is a modern retelling of the spider-man origin story and further.
After getting some reading under your belt, I'd also suggest checking out some of the books in the side bar.

  2. The absolute first spider-man comic is amazing Fantasy #15 from all the way back in 1962, and the first comic in the amazing spider-man main series came out in 1963. I'd suggest reading some of the early spider-man comics. They're a bit cheesy today, but still a lot of fun to read. You can find them in big collected omnibus form.

  3. Amazon is always a good bet for getting trades for cheap, but I like going to my local comic book stores. They need as much support as they can get and you can usually get the people working there to help you get into new series. Its also just a great place to hang out and talk about comics with people.

    Hope this helps :)

Marvel has not ever rebooted like DC has, but there are definitely places where you can jump on.

Okay, here's the deal. This isn't really considered spoilers anymore because its the whole pitch behind Superior Spider-man. Doctor Octopus managed to swap consciousness with Spider-man before he died. So Superior Spider-man is about Doc Ock becoming Spider-man and deciding to prove he can do it better than Peter ever did.

It sounds crazy. And it really is. But the writing has been fantastic and it is a fun ride. These are comic books so Peter will come back somehow. Probably not for a year or two. If that sounds fun, and it is!, then you can just pick up Dying Wish which is the end of Amazing Spider-man. Then pick up the first Volume of Superior.

Now. If you read all that and thought, damn I just really wanted to read about Peter Parker being Spider-Man. Then that is fine. Start with Brand New Day. That will give you about a 150 issue cushion in between that and Superior Spider-man.

Okay I know this has been a lot of recommendations and text. But if you have the money to spend I would really recommend you starting with Ends of the Earth then working your way to Superior Spider-man. This is not a necessity for story, but since you don't have a good grasp of who Peter is before Doc Ock takes over it won't have the same impact. Ends of the Earth really showcases who Peter is and why he does what he does. Also Doc Ock is the villain in it, so thats even more setup for Superior.

I started from J. Michael Straczynski's run on The Amazing Spider-Man and straight through Superior to now. Here's the reading order of J. Michael Straczynski to Big Time:

Go back and read Ultimate Spider-Man if you haven't already.

You can also go back to Brand New Day or Big Time as good starting points.

If you want to start with Deadpool, Marvel has been releasing these nice big Deadpool Classic trades, which collect his earliest appearances and then his 90's comic series, which outshines the current one to infinity. The first trade can be found right here and there are four more after it, with a sixth scheduled for next year.

As for Spidey, start with Brand New Day and work your way up from there. New stories, new villains, new cast -- it's perfect for you. Here's a link for you.

As for Batman ... well, I never recommend Batman, so read this awesome Superman story instead: Link

The Amazing Spider-Man: Coming Home could be good. I really enjoyed it and it started JMS on his run of writing Spidey, which lasted years. Mostly very good and mostly John Romita JR drawing.

If you want to start of a new status quo or way of being for Spidey, there's Brand New Day, which I don't recommend for quality, but more for having the stuff of Spidey with job, relationship stuff, new and old villains, new and old supporting cast.

Or, for something a fair bit different, darker, there's Superior Spider-Man, where 1 villain is now Spider-Man every issue, so that's worth a go.

Ultimate Spider-Man Volume 1 With Great Responsibility would be a good start, too, though a separate universe. Still Peter Parker, but a teenager and different ways of doing things with the villains, heroes etc.

I'd also recommend where it all started for Spidey, with Stan Lee and all them, with Essential Spider-Man, which has a number of Volumes with many annuals, issues throughout, most black and white, but good quality.

I really enjoyed/enjoy them.

From my understanding (In the way marvel is using it), it is simply a collection of about 6-7 comics that centralize around a specific theme and are in numerical order. http://www.amazon.com/Spider-Man-Brand-New-Day-Vol/dp/078512845X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1335195218&sr=1-1 contains Amazing spider-man 546-551.

Marvel does do collections however, which appear to be the same as a volume, but are far from it. Collections merely focus on a simple theme and don't have to actually follow each other in time or series. For instance, when I started to read Spider-man about 4 years ago, I was Brand new to comics and made the mistake of buying the collection, Spider-man: Back in black, thinking it was a volume of comics, while in fact it was a collection. Here http://www.amazon.com/Sensational-Spider-Man-Black-Roberto-Aguirre-Sacasa/dp/0785129979/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1335195546&sr=1-4 you can see how it is a random assortment of comics that feature Spider-man in his Symbiote suit.

TL;DR Collections are only based on a theme, while volumes follow a Story arch and are always in order.

Hope that helps!

Brand New Day has a long run with many classic Spider-man elements. It usually gets lamented due to the awkward transition from the 2000's continuity. http://www.amazon.com/Spider-Man-Brand-New-Day-Vol/dp/078512845X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1406135725&sr=8-1&keywords=Spider-man+Brand+NEw+Day

Ultimate Spider-man is a fantastic read. I personally stopped after the ultimatum run.

Spider-man: Blue is an essential read. Great art, and an even better script.

The most recent Spider-Man relaunch is Amazing Spider-Man: Worldwide Vol 1, so that's a great place if you wanna just jump on board with what's happening now.

If you wanna spend some time catching up first, you could also start with Brand New Day, which was a sort of soft reset for the Spider-Man brand and established much of the current status quo.
