Mountain bikes can go over a huge amount rough terrain....and with the speed of a bike I don't have to go over rough terrain. I can go around. Someone with a 40 lbs pack is going to get maybe 20~30 miles in per day even less if the terrain is "rough". I can do that in 2~2.5 hours tops on my bike. I can easily cover 80 to 100 miles on my bike with a bag on my bike. With a 72 hour bag full of food and such it will take you 3 days to cover 60 miles. I can do that in a very pleasant ride in one afternoon.

Folding bikes fit in the trunk of your car(where my BoB is right now) not in your BOB. Your argument of putting a Bike in a BoB is absurd and your trying to make it so that you can be "right". Anywhere I can store a BoB I can store a folding bike. And they cost less than $140 on this website called amazon. You should check it out sometime. Here is a link to one.

I am not sure about your finances but $140 is not too expensive.
My route from my work to my home is about 16 miles. I didn't by a 72 hour pack at first because I didn't need one. I bought a bike. If EMP stikes at 5:00PM I will jump on my bike and be home for dinner. I also have a small pack in my trunk now because I'd like to have a few things with me.

I am also not sure where you live or how much you have traveled but there is a huge swathe of the american mid-west that is very very very flat. Now mountains there and easy to ride the bike offroad. Even here in AL I can easily offroad the bike. Skirting around fields is actually pretty easy. And anything I can't get through on the bike I can go around because I can cover 100 miles in a day of I really push myself.
