That looks exactly like my light, which is meant to attach to the seat post and angled so that the light shines parallel to the road. Is

This way it reaches a lot further down the road. https://www.amazon.com/Stupidbright-SBR-1-Strap--Rear-Light/dp/B00OWSR43W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1473967871&sr=8-1&keywords=stupid+bright

If I got a car coming up from behind me at 50 mph I sure as hell want him to start noticing me from at least 200 yards away rather than 20. If that light points up like that, it defeats the purpose of the design.

If you got even light fog, you're fucked after 5 yards the way that light is set up.

It's OPs life, so it wont affect me. Just wondering why someone would go out of the way to cripple lights functionality.

a cyclist not having lights is often used as an excuse in situations where someone is injured or killed and negligent driving is a major factor; in a city where most streets are well-lit and cars have headlights "I didn't see them" isn't a good justification unless the cyclist is doing something stupid/unexpected/illegal (in OP's case all three). That being said, you're foolish if you ride at night without some basic lights on. You can buy a cheap set for a buck (downsides- they're not waterproof and don't do well in heavy rain, not super bright, and shipping from Hong Kong takes weeks- but they're only $1 for the set and should last a few months) or splurge and for $11 get a set of two "stupidbright" rear lights.
