Why are you against a hub? They make everything so much easier.

Silvania smart+ are $29/bulb.

Anything Z-Wave and almost anything Zigbee will work with a SmartThings hub.

I have gone with a handful of Z-Wave switches. One switch can operate multiple light bulbs, and are still usable as a switch.

I think the general consensus is to go with switches instead of bulbs, for cheaper cost, and easier for anyone other than you to operate, like guests. Unless you are renting, or want the color change ability.

I have been eyeing the Sylvania Smart + (Formerly Osram Lightify) bulbs for some color changing bulbs that work with SmartThings.

I don't have one, but many people love their Phillips hue. I think you can get basic functionality through the Zigbee support, without the Phillips Hub, but if you want the best experience the hub is better. Still integrates well with SmartThings.

LIFX also get good reviews and works with SmartThings.

I've heard good things about the Osram Lightify RGBW bulbs, they're Zigbee so they require a hub but people have reported much more accurate colors than the Hue's.

Did a little looking following your idea, I looked for Hue alternatives that work with the smartthings hub, and found this. The bulb may still be a bit expensive at $40USD, but that's $10USD cheaper than the equivalent Hue bulb, and with the Sylvania bulb, I don't need a special hub just for the lights.

Yes- the SYLVANIA LIGHTIFY by Osram bulb I have does have RGBW color capability. https://amzn.com/B0197840KQ

It works well and we use it daily in my sons nursery- we set the bulb to softer colors not so hard on the eyes and as a night light by dimming the bulb and selecting a blue color. I have it set to turn on/off using a IFTTT recipe. Color/dimming is done via the SmartThings app.

"Zigbee RGBW Bulb" is the DTH I'm using. Local execution shown as well.

Great work! I was a little surprised that Wink isn't on there. For $35 the 1st gen hub is a great entry point for beginners as a Zigbee/Z-Wave radio. I used Wink's built in automations (Robots) to get started while getting HA up and running. It's easy to turn Wink into a "dumb" hub once you get HA all figured out, then you can look into dedicated radios for HA to take Wink out of the picture completely. Wink can be a little slow at times, but it is a great low cost entry point.

You also might want to add Sengled Element bulbs and Sylvania Smart+ color bulb, they are inexpensive and work extremely well!
