There is a name for that, OMAD (one meal a day) and it's a perfectly viable plan, as long as the total calories for the day are less than his TDEE. And it's highly dependent on his natural tendencies or his ability to adapt, because the early stages of intermittent fasting (an overarching name for periodic eating that encompasses OMAD) can be difficult to manage until your body gets used to it and stops screaming at you to feed it.

I practice a similar strategy, though not as extreme, because I found it fits my life. I don't eat until 11:00 AM, M-F that meal is pretty consistent, 90% of the time it's 7.5 ounces of lean meat (canned, consistent) and about .2 lbs of spinach (I go through a 1 lb clamshell of it every week ) which totals ~245 calories, and then I typically don't eat again until dinner time, and then I consume the rest of my target 1550 calories before bedtime.

If I do snack between lunch and dinner, I try very hard to keep my total pre-dinner calories at 400. I call it the "400 at 4:00" plan and while some would find it incredibly unmanageable, I find that it fits me and my life very well.

Being at 400 calories (usually less) when dinner rolls around means I have a tremendous amount of leeway. If we decide to have fast food, no problem, I don't even have to look for low cal shit (although a good 500 calorie salad from Chick-fil-a has almost completely replaced their sandwich for me) and surprise dinner plans with friends are also no sweat.

What he's doing isn't inherently unhealthy, although it's sustainability is dependent on whether or not it fits him personally.
