I hope they gave you at least a toner/tracer?

I'm used to seeing the standard toners: such as:
[greenlee tracer] (https://www.amazon.com/Greenlee-AT8LK-LAN-Toner-Kit/dp/B002UD5PJG) I've used this one, and it works well. The exposed strands on the tracer are also helpful if you want to trace out individual strands, or try and connect a butt-set to a pair.

I was curious and also saw this fluke tester, which looks like it might be a lot more helpful (as it measures distance to the fault). I've not tried it, but that might be helpful. warning: This could be crazy expensive.

Not sure if you wanted advice, or just wanted to vent, but I figured I'd offer a suggestion for next time.

You'll want that toner to test if all 4 pairs of wires are good, it's a must have for troubleshooting a wire, but walking around mapping the wires is WAY easier with an inductive toner.

That one's a bit high unless you're doing this all the time. I'd get a cheaper one. You can work those two ways.

  • Someone with a walkie or a cell goes around to each port plugging in the "ringer/toner" (sends a steady or warbling tone down the wire). On the patch panel end you just poke the pointy part in the ports until it sings out, partner labels the outlet and moves to next wire while you label the panel. This is probably what you want.

  • Later down the road you can plug in the wall plate and stick the pointy bit in the wire bundle. It'll sing out when you get close, louder when you touch the wire.

If it's not clear, the toner works on induction, you don't have to touch bare wire, just get close. Get one with headphones (they're standard 1/8" plugs if you already have some). I've had a really low signal that I had to pick up on the headphones. Also nice to have when you're annoying the accounting dept be-blooping in the wiring closet. Be cautious, that shit can blow your ears out. I know because reasons.

You're also gonna have to have that toner to find where the phone wires go. Same idea except you're poking around the phone block instead of the patch panel.

I was a wiring fool back in the day. Be glad to help with that or the networking. Are you running any new wire?

Probably get shot for saying this around here but I'd get a used Dell switch off ebay. Don't get one from some dude who's selling his old lab gear. Find a seller that refurbs equipment for a living. They'll have lots of sales, a good rep and plenty of a given unit in stock.

Been in love with my Ubiquiti access points if you're doing wireless. Doing wireless?

We have 3, 2 Greenlee's and 1 Fluke. The Greenlee's are the AT8LK and the 701K-G. The Fluke is the Pro3000 BUT it has never really worked right. I would thoroughly recommend the Greenlee's.
