Your current speed is 1gb/s? If thats the case...then MAYBE leasing would be good for awhile, but I would still say you would save money in the long run by purchasing your own.

Even at $5/month (which I agree is cheap), you could buy this modem for $46 (-$10 with current coupon, so $36), and be done paying it off in less than 1 year.

What model modem are you leasing for $5?

Also to clarify, if you know you'll be using a router for any prolonged period at time (e.g. more than a month or two in your near-future life), then you should invest in buying the router yourself, rather than renting it. You can obviously get a higher-end router, or a lower-end router, and both will be sufficient for 1Gbps transfers (just check the stats first. 1000Mbps = 1Gbps). Either way, even with an insane router, you'll probably pay it off inside a year (in terms of EPB). If you need help setting it up, ask around, offer some beers to a tech friend/acquaintance to set it up and show you anything you might need to know.

This is my router, which is obviously one of the pricier ones, but this specific one is "paid off" inside 7 months.

From initial glancing, this router would also be sufficient, and would be "paid off" inside 3 months.

Also, the main reason to rent would be that the monthly payment is cheaper in the long run - e.g. you replace the router every 1-2 years or something - but that's not going to happen. The monthly payment will rarely be cheaper in the long run. Routers will last multiple years even outside of warranty. And they don't have the upgrade cycle of a phone. And you'll rarely, if ever, need to "turn it off and turn it on" like those old blue Linksys routers. Those sucked.

Did the price go up to 70 recently? I'm looking at this one right now https://www.amazon.com/Tenda-AC15-Wireless-AC1900-1300Mbps-External/dp/B0143HBZMW

Beast Win10 machine. I'm getting what feels like enormous input lag spikes/rubberbanding virtually non-stop. I can't walk through a fucking doorway in this game. Ping is solid, framerate is steady.

Only thing I can think of is maybe port forwarding? But I can't find any information anywhere about ports for BF1 specifically. I also can't find port forwarding info for my Tenda AC15 wireless router or my Arris modem. On that note - do I only have to worry about ports on the wireless router, or will there be some additional config to be done on the router? I realize this is probably a monumentally stupid question.

This is the only game I've ever had these kinds of connection issues with. If I can't solve it by the end of the beta, there is 0% chance of me purchasing this game.

As a poor man's option, what do you think if I just got the Tenda AC15 and keeping the modem that I have? I just need the wifi to be at least twice as fast; my wired connection at 140 mbps is honestly good enough for my needs (I typically don't have more than one device connected to the wifi at a time).

I've had [this one] (https://www.amazon.com/Tenda-AC15-Wireless-AC1900-1300Mbps-External/dp/B0143HBZMW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1486738709&sr=8-1&keywords=tenda) for the past year. I have gigabit internet and TV service through Cincinnati Bell and have experienced zero issues using this. Best router I have ever owned.

Is it possible the RJ11 cable is converted to RJ45 at the box outside the house? All I know at the moment is that an RJ45 cable comes into the basement "from the outside" and supplies internet.
That was fine when I purchased a Netgear N600 modem/router (http://www.hostdata.com.au/content/product_descriptions/26/2649/264922/DGND3700-diagram87-17294.jpg). I just plugged the RJ45 into the "Gig Ethernet" port you see in the picture. Since that modem/router needs a lot of adjustments to connect to Centurylink, I instead purchased an Actiontec C1000A, but was stumped because that unit has no RJ45 ports on the back and that's all I've ever used. (http://img.bbystatic.com/BestBuy_US/images/products/5570/5570198_ba.jpg)

Can I use the C1000A as the modem bridge (turn wifi off) in the basement and then hard-wire connect to a more powerful router (like this: http://www.amazon.com/Tenda-AC15-Wireless-AC1900-1300Mbps-External/dp/B0143HBZMW) upstairs in the living room?

Maybe give this one a shot? Haven't heard of the brand name, but reviews seem good, and price seems right. 3 antenna...and decently rated speeds.

I bought this on Amazon a while back:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CVOLKKQ/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's a Docsis 3.0, but can handle speeds up to 680Mbps, and is under $55.

If anyone is looking for a Gigabit wireless router with Gigabit Ethernet ports for under $50, I got this one over the weekend and it works great:
