The comics are NOT like the movies. We don't have a script for the MCU Infinity War so we have no idea which comics it will borrow from. If past MCU movies are any indication, it will borrow from many different series spanning decades.

That said, there is a very popular 90's event(s) called Infinity Gauntlet that was followed up by the Infinity War:

Thanos used to be very similar to how Hickman wrote him when he was much younger, but he went through a ton of character development starting at the end of Infinity Gauntlet. You should read Starlin's Warlock (everything in this trade) for some of how Thanos used to be.

Then Death of Captain Marvel, as Shadow_Gabriel already said

Then for his full story/character development start reading Infinity Gauntlet --> Infinity War (and the Warlock and the Infinity Watch/Warlock Chronicles tie-ins) --> Infinity Crusade (and the aforementioned tie-ins) --> Blood and Thunder (crossover between Thor/Silver Surfer/the two previously mentioned tie-ins) --> Thanos: Cosmic Powers --> Infinity Abyss --> Marvel Universe: The End --> Thanos series #1-12 (collected in this trade) --> Modern Cosmic Marvel (although the only really necessary ones to Thanos are Annihilation and Thanos Imperative) --> Infinity Revelation --> Thanos vs Hulk --> Infinity Relativity --> Infinity Entity --> Infinity Finale --> Ultimates by Al Ewing (current comic)

Hickman basically took Thanos' "I'm such an edgy dark lord" persona from his pre-Infinity Gauntlet days and ignored a couple decades of character development where he became a lot more complex and "calm" if that makes sense. For a lot of the time Thanos was more of an anti-villain schemer than an actual bad guy, and Hickman threw that out the window and made him a dumber, edgier brick. He had great writing, just not for Thanos.

It actually is 616 canon. You can see the how Thanos deals with the aftermath of The End in Thanos: Redemption, which itself is considered a prequel to the Annihilation events.

Infinity Gauntlet is a classic, and is probably Thanos' most well-known story arc. If you want to read it, you should start with the prelude story Rebirth of Thanos and follow that up with Infinity Gauntlet. After that, I highly recommend the Thanos solo series Thanos: Redemption. You're definitely going to want to read Annihilation after that, too.

Just an FYI, you might want to check out [Marvel Unlimited](http://www.marvel.com/unlimited](http://amzn.com/0785188894), which is kind of like Netflix except for Marvel comics. It's $10/month or $70/year for access to basically their entire back catalog, literally thousands of comics, and they've got a deal right now where you can try it out for just $1 for the first month.

Do you mean the Jim Starlin/Keith Giffen one? Then yes.

Oh, you need to read this before Annihilation and this before War of Kings.

Get the Annihilation Omnibus and if you're willing to wait until next June they're releasing an Annihilation: Conquest Omnibus.

An alternative would be to subscribe to Marvel Unlimited. $10/month and you've got access to the entire cosmic saga and much more. It'd be much cheaper.

> Here is the "rematch" in against Eternity Here is the end result of that fight Here is the ultimate consequence of that fight Here is arguably one of Thanos' greatest accomplishments

"Marvel Universe: The End"

> Thanos did fight against the Beyonder/Kosmos/Maker, one of the most powerful entities in all Marvel. Although not at full power( pre-retcon beyonder was imaginably powerful), the Beyonder is nowadays a cosmic cube with awareness in a physical body.

"Thanos: Redemption"

> Thanos against Galactus

"Thanos: Redemption"

> Thanos vs. the Champion, one of the Elders of the Galaxy who is nearly invincible.

"The Thanos Quest", which is collected in "Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos" and is the prelude to "Infinity Gauntlet"

I think you're talking about that Jim Starlin and Keith Giffen Thanos comics. If yes, this is very good, IMO it's better than Thanos Rising.

The Annihilation Omnibus (and the three paperback volumes it was originally released as) do in fact collect the Drax: Earthfall mini. If you want Thanos, it was actually re-released fairly recently.

I personally followed this suggested reading order: http://www.comicbookherald.com/marvel-cosmic-reading-order/

Before getting to the main Annihilation storyline, it suggests reading the following:

  1. Annihilation Classic
  2. Marvel Universe: The End
  3. Thanos: Redemption

I've read the first two of those three books and, while they were entertaining, they are not essential for understanding the Annihilation storyline.

Although, Annihilation Classic is a fun look at the old-school origins of all of the major heroes involved in the storyline.
