I read The Dark Lord hoping to learn more about Kenneth Grant since his (Grant's) primary texts are, I am led to understand, notoriously difficult to follow.

Unfortunately, as is often the case with Levenda, you get some fraction of solid scholarship, some fraction of wild speculation on the part of Levenda, and no way to tell how much of each. So I didn't come away from it feeling like I knew any more than I did going in. Not to say it wasn't interesting, but if the goal is (as it was for me) to get a primer on Grant, it didn't do it.

This review in particular from Amazon sums it up pretty well I think:

Now to be fair, that might be more a failure on my part as a reader than on Levenda as a writer, but that's just my take.

Another couple of book on my reading list that I hope will do a better job introducing Grant are:

  • The History of British Magic After Crowley by Dale Evans
  • Sounds Beyond Meaning - Kenneth Grant and His Work, a collection of essays published by Von Zos press

    ------

    Anyway. . .

From what I was able to surmise fromother prior reading: Yes. Grant does extend the Thelemic current and mythology with elements of Lovecraft (the 'Necronomicon Gnosis') among others (Tantra, Vodun). Whether that counts as 'a significant amount' is of course subjective.

As far as I know there is no direct link between Grant's 'Typhonian' current and the Temple of Set, the latter being an offshoot (I believe) of the Church of Satan -- aside from the fact that Typhon and Set are both [in some probably imprecise sense] names or guises or cognate versions of 'The Devil'. It's probably safe to say, though that both are 'LHP' (if 'LHP' means anything).

    ------

You should also know that Starfire Publishing in the UK is in the process of re-releasing the Typhonian Trilogies which were for a long time out of print and not available except at very high prices. (http://www.starfirepublishing.co.uk/) As I say, the primary texts are hard to follow on their own which is why I was so hoping to find a good overview/introduction.
