Scott Duff has an excellent series of books on the M1 Garand. For the M1 carbine I recommend War Baby by Larry Ruth.

While I can't contribute more than the others already have, I can say that I just also bought a real M1D over the weekend with a proper original M84 scope and other fixin's.

Scott Duff has a good book on production info of post WWII Garands: http://www.amazon.com/M1-Garand-Post-World-War/dp/1888722002?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00

This one by Peter Senich covers snipers of the same era, as well as the M1D and M84 scope: http://www.amazon.com/Limited-War-Sniping-Peter-Senich/dp/B000AMOT64?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00

I got nothing regarding markings though, sorry
