It's only $3.60/gram when you buy the 5.55g for $20
I think a lot of people recommend Arctic MX-4 but personally I used Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut and it's been working great.
I would check XTU while you are playing. Check and see if you are thermal or power throttling. Have you underclocked it to -.110 yet? Repaste and tell me how it went!

edit Make sure you skip the battery part, just worry about the removal of the heatsink Put exactly how much paste he has on it on yours. If you want the same applicator he has get this:

I'd recommend replacing the thermal paste for the CPU. The paste from the factory tends to last 12-18 months before it dries up - and then temps go up.
This paste does not cure (dry up), so it'll be good for 4-5 years without any fuss.

Mind blowing that people instantly go to liquid metal, not that it's extremely difficult to paste but the cons of bricking your laptop or messing it up you're better of buying a quality paste such as thermal grizzly kryonaut as its non conductive and almost the go to choice by many overclockers.
Also thermal grizzly has thermal pads you can buy and can cut to size called minus 8, I'll link both below.

I also bought an 17 R5 yesterday and once it ships I plan on doing some testing and replacing its thermal compounds to measure the improvements.

Fantastic. Great input. I'll get some thermal paste actually that's a good call.
Is this accurate for the colour?

EDIT: Just to be clear I take it electrically conductive pastes are out of the question?
Trying to decide between this:

Thanks! Happy to hear I was able to help :D (just followed you on Vimeo, make sure you put the Home Depot on top, and your newer videos as well). My computer runs well, though I did decide to put 128gb of memory instead of 64. It wasn't the original plan, but thinking that my memory had died, I ordered additional 64 since I had to send the "faulty" one for RMA and couldn't stop working. Once I resetted BIOS and replaced them in different slots, alongside the new 64GB they were are all working fine. Decided not to return any of them :) As for OCing the CPU, my max is 4.3 on all cores stable. I can't cool more than that, so I'm happy with the result.

Let's get to your build (it's looking good):
So all in all I would say this:
I think that's it. If you have more questions, just ask and remember, don't be hard on yourself, you'll make mistakes and learn from them. Looking back I could say: Oh I could of done this, or that, bought that instead, but you learn by doing.

Looking forward to seeing the final build!

For the undervolt you can easily push easily,
-120mV core ( moving to -150 you need to check for stability )
-100mV cache ( -120 may cause instability )
-100mV iGPU core
-100mV system agent
Make a throttlestop profile and make it start automatically. There is a ton of tutorials.
You can cut down the clock speeds since you cant see benefit above 3.8ghz .
Make 4.0ghz single core , 3.9ghz dual core , 3.8ghz quad core , or lower in a similar 0.1ghz decrease.
These downclocks will get the higher undervolting values possible , like -180 core.

In terms of significance Undervolt = Thermal Paste > Cooling Pad

I had my gaming laptop for about two years, and then noticed it getting hotter than usual. I opened it up removed all the dust (not much) and tried it again. It was still hot so i assumed the thermal paste had gone bad. I reapplied and it ran a bit cooler afterwards.
My opinion best thermal (very little research)

If you have had it for a few years with constant usage, it will help. Especially if you have noticed it getting hotter gradually over time.

Do not worry about messing stuff up, the thermal paste is non conductive so it will not short anything out if you make it messy. Also the motherboard and cpu glass are pretty tough. Don't worry too much about damaging anything.
