Hey broski. Back in the day, the Zowie bungee was the only decent option, but nowadays almost any mainstream-ish bungee should work.
That said, here are a few recommendations, considering you might like certain brands/aesthetics/colors more than others!

I was pretty skeptical when I purchased one to try. I got this one :

I tried all the other ghetto hacks prior to purchasing the mouse bungee like taping to the side edge of desk, taping cable to back of monitor, sandwich the cord between two monitors etc etc..
While those all functionally improved the mouse drag problem, it looked like shit. There is a reason for it being called ghetto mods bc it looks ghetto on your desk.
If you value the aesthetics of your desk setup then a mouse bungee is not a bad investment. I am extremely picky with keyboard / mouse peripherals and only use the best.
It looks good on my desk and serves a purpose. IMO, its not a waste of money if and only if your eyes cant deal with ghetto rigging something up.
The Zowie Camade is a really good one. I personally use this one since it was the only really good one on amazon. I would have got the Camade if it was available on amazon. The one I use fits the thick Logitech cables (I have the G403).
Looks like Thermaltake has a good solution, in the quick video they have it shows that the slot in which the mouse cord is placed is made out of rubber, which to me seems like any sized cable can fit in it.
If your friend plays a lot of FPS games, you could consider getting him a mouse bungee cord such as this. You can find a good range of them for $20-$30 bucks, and the higher end ones even have extra USB connectors and the like.
I have the Thermaltake Galeru. I think it was worth every penny.
