A great modern era Thor comic starting point is J Michael Straczynski's Thor. He reintroduced and sort of rebooted Thor for the modern era.

You can also jump to Jason Aarons incredibly epic run, it's still going.

After Original Sin, when he's unworthy, Thor relaunched with a new #1, then relaunched AGAIN after Secret Wars as The Mighty Thor. Then summertime last year, relaunched as Thor with a new #1.

Here's the book it came from. Really good art and characters and it really impacted the all the Thor stories to follow it.

For more really awesome Thor try[ this one.] (http://www.amazon.com/Thor-Thunder-Volume-Butcher-Graphic/dp/0785166971/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1414265207&sr=8-1&keywords=thor+god+of+thunder) Thor has to fight a serial killer who hunts Gods with beautiful watercolory art. Here's some really touching screencap from that series.

Oh and stop by /r/comicbooks sometime, we love getting people into comics.

Start with Jason Aaron's

A great place to start with Thor would be his new book God of Thunder

As for the X-Men characters you mentioned, i'm actually sad to admit that I don't know many good comics staring them.

See below. Reading Jason Aaron's Thor first, then Cates' Venom, then Absolute Carnage is a really rewarding reading experience for new/returning readers IMO. That and Thanos Wins + Cosmic Ghost Rider are what got me back into comics.

Thor: God of Thunder #1 - #11 by Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic (#1 - #5 are on Kindle unlimited here)
Thanos Vol. 2 #13 - #18 by Donny Cates and Geoff Shaw
Cosmic Ghost Rider #1 - #5 by Donny Cates and Dylan Burnett
Secret Wars by Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic
Venom Vol. 4 #1 - #6 (on Kindle Unlimited)
Infinity Gauntlet by Jim Starlin and George Perez
The Vision #1 - #12 by Tom King and Gabriel Walta

I've heard Hickman's Fantastic Four and Avengers runs are very good as well, but I haven't read them myself.

Some ongoing books worth checking out are:

House of X / Powers of X
Immortal Hulk
Venom
Absolute Carnage

If you want to read the first issues, it can be both easier and cheaper to pick them up in Trade Paperbacks (collected editions of usually about half a dozen or so issues). The first trade is caleld The God Butcher and costs $15.13 on Amazon (but probably the full retail price of $19.99 in store). It could be worth keeping an eye out for that.
