These chromebooks (non-upgraded) regularly sell refurbished by Acer for $150, no sales tax. 16GB and 32GB versions. Chromebook=$150, 128GB SSD Upgrade=$70.

I'd probably try selling the chromebook with its original drive and the 128GB drive separately. Your value is just a bit high, and not many people will be interested in the SSD upgrade especially with the 2GB ram version.

This is a great chromebook, and works amazingly for basic internet/Google Docs (has word/excel/etc equivalents). Battery life really is THAT good (on new/refurbished units, can't speak for this one in particular of course). You can use it all day and even go several days to a week between charges with light on/off use.

Does it have to be a sata SSD?

M.2 SSDs or even mSATA at that capacity can be found for 50-65$

I would recommend the SSD. It is an easy install and it frees up your USB ports. FYI dont buy that old version of the MyDigitalSSD SSD, they tend to fail after a couple months (but the RMA process is easy). Here is the updated one

BTW, the cheapest option is a $50 m.2 SSD and keep the 500GB drive installed. Boot from the m.2

this model is is only 128GB, there is a 256GB version too

You have three options:

  1. Replace stock 2.5" mechanical HDD with a 2.5" SSD

  2. Supplement stock 2.5" mechanical HDD with the M.2 NGFF SSD (as a secondary drive alongside).

  3. Combine options 1 & 2 for "the whole nine yards." Replace HDD with SDD; additionally, add an M.2 NGFF (I did this on my Lenovo Y510P)

The manner in which you utilize each drive is up to you. Generally, you want your OS booting from your fastest drive and your large-data-storage on the slower drives (which usually have higher capacity).

    ---

The Lenovo U430P should have a slot for a 42mm M.2 NGFF drives. Sometimes, the connector is missing if you did not order the laptop with this drive standard. You should open up the bottom cover and confirm that you have a black plastic connector to hold the drive, as in this picture: LINK . Don't be afraid to pop open the bottom cover. You'll have to do it eventually anyway if you want to upgrade.

NOTE: M.2 NGFF and mSATA are not the same and generally not compatible. See this link for a quick overview: LINK . According to the Lenovo U430P service manual, only M.2 NGFF drives are mentioned in Field Replaceable/Consumer Replaceable Unit options LINK . In theory M.2 NGFF should be faster than mSATA (PCIe > SATA III). In practice and due to current hardware offerings and size limitations, this may not yet be true. I advise that you carefully check reviews and benchmarks to get an idea of actual performance expectations.

MyDigitalSSD is practically the only company at the moment selling M.2 NGFF drives in the right form factor for your laptop (42mm), with big enough size (Up to 128 GB), with decent performance, and at a reasonable price: LINK LINK . They have good read speed (~400 MB/s read) but poor write speed (~70 MB/s write) because of the limited number NAND chips that they can fit onto the board.

SSD: http://amzn.com/B00LNF1RVM

Adapter: http://amzn.com/B00HKV2TVK

http://chromebook-falco.blogspot.com/2013/11/here-are-mechanics-of-ngff-ssd-removal.html

You need the adapter to properly format the drive. It's hit or miss if you have to or not. You also can't seem to clone ChromeOS so you'll want to use the adapter as a mini external SSD and get any relevant data from it. It's a pretty simple procedure, but the SSD is really hidden, just be patient.

I've got an X250 arriving tomorrow (was supposed to be today, but UPS's Louisville hub got hit by a snowstorm and the plane my package was on got diverted to Chicago). I've got a Crucual MX100 256GB SSD (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148820) ready for it. Additionally, I picked up MyDigitalSSD 128GB Super Boot Eco M.2 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LNF1RVM/) when it was on sale for $45. It's marketed as a hard drive accelerator cache (fast reads, slowish writes), but in this case the MX100 is faster than it for both reads and writes anyway. So basically it's going in the X250 "just because"; no idea what I'll do with it.

I did know that the only options were the Transcend and MyDigitalSSD. I bought the MyDigitalSSD from Amazon a few days ago but I didn't realize that it was apparently bad.

I did some googling and found that MyDigitalSSD has put out a firmware update for the SSDs--at least for the ones that I bought. At least on Amazon, most of the reviews complaining that the SSD broke were in 2014, and I didn't find any after that year so hopefully the firmware update worked. I also saw a review from 2015 which said that the firmware update was included in the SSD that reviewer bought so hopefully I will not have to do the firmware update myself.

I'm hopefully going to have time this weekend to switch SSD's and install galliumOS. If you're interesting in how switching out a MyDigitalSSD goes, I'll try to document it somehow.

Same thing, but $10 cheaper. Works the same on Chromebooks.

Yes, I just upgraded my acer c720 to a 128gb ssd, and I have 110gb available for linux. For an easy install, I would recommend using code starter's installation scripts, it allows you to determine how much space you want for your linux partiton.

Also, here is a link to a $55 128gb m.2 ngff ssd

Edit: I am in the wrong sub, the code starter scripts will install using chrubuntu, which will set up a chrome os/ubuntu dual boot, not crouton.

Depends on the size. This has served me well for 6ish months so far, the controller is supposed to be reliable. It's got "slow" writes, but more than fast enough reads. http://www.amazon.com/MyDigitalSSD-128GB-120GB-Super-Drive/dp/B00LNF1RVM

u/Mcsquizzy · 1 pointr/chrubuntu

In your Amazon link, the top result is a "MyDigitalSSD 128GB (120GB) SSD" for $60. They list the speeds as:

  • Write speed up to 545 MB/sec
  • Read speed up to 430 MB/sec

Now, here's a "Transcend 128GB UHS 3 SD card" for about $70. They lists speeds as:
  • Write speed up to 95MB/s
  • Read speed up to 60MB/s

If you are going to upgrade the SSD in your C720, this is the one to get.

Disclaimer: This is my Amazon affiliate account link. If you do purchase through my link I will get a small amount back from Amazon. If you don't want to use my link, use these instead or do a search on Amazon:

I am believe I am stuck with a Samsung 950 m.2 ssd, my motherboard has this daughter board; my current m.2 is this ssd with two notches and is 42mm long (I think this is only for SATA III?), I have only seen the 960 with one notch. Unless that daughter board can accommodate the one notch m.2 SSDs. I am not sure.
