The latest updates to iTunes/OS X/Apple TV occasionally results in a system not being able to see the Apple TV until it, the computer, or iTunes is restarted. Not a huge problem, but annoying.

Mirroring a computer or iOS device to an Apple TV can consume huge amounts of local bandwidth. If you are running both the Apple TV and the mirroring device over wifi, you can rapidly chew through a good portion of an AP's airtime. We had a teacher who left her MacBook mirroring to her classroom AppleTV while screensaver was running, and over the course of about 12 hours the device transferred half a terabyte of data. Educate your users to disconnect from the Apple TV when they are not using it, not just shut off the TV/Projector.

Performance is generally much better when using the Apple TV on ethernet, unless you have a lot of APs/low client load.

Unlike OS X and iOS, Apple TVs cannot accept OTA-supplied certificates for 802.1x (aka WPA Enterprise) secured wireless networks at connection time. The certificates must be installed over USB using Apple Configurator.

If you plan on using peer-to-peer Airplay, rather than using the local network infrastructure, be aware that it uses channel 149 in the 5Ghz band and 6 in the 2.4Ghz to handle the setup/streaming. If you have APs on these channels, the Apple TV and AP will interfere with each other, resulting in degraded performance for both. Avoid using channel 149 in areas with Apple TVs if possible. The official Apple doc for this information is here.

Total Mount makes some nifty brackets for the Apple TV –very handy for televisions that are VESA-mounted.

Some Android phones have infrared transmitters which can be used with an app to send Apple TV remote commands. If you are allowing BYOD and have mischievous students, you may have some Apple TVs behave "mysteriously." Pairing the included remote to the Apple TV solves this problem, though if the remote is lost the Apple TV will have to be reset.

You will need spare remotes. ;)

At work I use the Total Mount for our TVs with ATVs.

It's very flexible, it can be mounted at the top or bottom and has plenty of positions to get the ATV pointed in the direction you need.

I have it set so that the ATV peeks over the top of the TV. The ATV has one of the best IR receivers so I never have any issues with my remotes.
