You can buy a vegan starter. I think they come in powdered form and it may come in plastic but you only have to buy it once (always keep a litter of your yogurt for the next batch) and you will save way more plastic in the future by not buying already made yogurt.
Here's one I found through amazon, but you can also try health stores or vegan friendly grocery stores.
But the best way is to find someone who already has a live culture yogurt and ask to have a little of it. I bet there's a place on the internet that helps you find local people to exchange yogurt cultures and sour dough starters with. And if there isn't we should make one.
