Dashcams, put a 64gb card in it and it can record for about 32 hours non-stop.

Have a 4TB G-Drive back-up harddrive, dump all of the footage at the end of every 24 hour cycle.

Get a lapel camera: http://www.amazon.com/Veho-Muvi-Pro-Micro-Camcorder/dp/B0037P5CAI/ref=pd_sim_sbs_e_3

Attach it to your shirt, keep the batteries fresh, make sure the internal clock is accurate. Activate it every hour for at least 5 minutes to give updates of what you're doing. The second model can record up to 24 hours with a 16gb msd card, they also have voice activated modes.

Also finally, install a GPS phone tracker onto your own phone, and keep track of where you're going and when with timestamps.

There are also some voice operated audio and video recording apps out there for both Android and iOS that can stream to external storage.

Dump all of these to a drive, one folder for your car, one for your person, and one for your phone data.

Along with testimony of friends and family, and surveillance cameras at wherever you're going, it would be hard to argue that you did something that wasn't picked up by any of these devices.

If you get a 4TB model, you should be able to store a little over two months worth of data on you, at the end of two months, I would clear out the oldest week, so you have a continuous 2 month backlog of your personal activity.

Also, make sure what the laws in your country or state are, and potentially contact local authorities, explain to them you're worried about your safety and you simply want to keep a record of yourself and your surroundings.

There are also home-security cameras that you can also have streaming to a similar drive. So you'll have an almost complete record of yourself, and your personal surroundings.

This

It isn't the best quality but its within your price range and very, very small.

EDIT: If you can find a way to protect your phone, it would probably be better quality. It would suck for it to take a BB though. This Muvi Veho has a very small lens and metal body though so I'm sure it could withstand a beating.

Thanks for watching :-) I guess you get what you pay for, in total I have spent £30 (from a gift voucher) on the camera.

I'd like a drift or gopro but they are way out of my budget at the moment unfortunately.

Hi thebarkingdog,
An English cop here. We've had body cams at our force for several months now, and I think they're a fantastic tool. To address some of your concerns:
The camera we use is a Veho Muvi. I'm not sure on the exact model, but here's a link to a similar one. It's so small that many members of the public do not see it, although we do inform them we are recording.

>First are the small issues, what are the rules regarding videotaping when a police officer needs to use the bathroom? Will he/she be allowed to turn it off? What happens if this officer forgets (legitimately) to turn it back on? Being videotaped will change the way I interact with my partners and coworkers, just because I'm a government employee, does this mean I'm not allowed to have a personal conversation on the job? How else am I supposed to bond with the people that I have to trust in scary situations?

The recorder has the option to turn it on and off at your discretion. As a rule of thumb, when we're en-route to an incident it is advised that we turn it on and leave it on until the incident is finished. "But what happens if you forget?!" Nothing happens. We have been told by professional standards that these are a tool to protect us not catch us out.

Once the incident is over, we can go back to the station, review the footage, and cut/paste as we see fit. It is then uploaded to a central server. However, Joe public, I hear you cry out "So they edit out the bit where they beat you up - DISGUSTING". Just remember if there is footage missing, and a complaint comes in, you have just potentially missed out on the best opportunity to save yourself. professional standards could view it that you were indeed hiding something if you start cutting out random pieces. We're advised to just let it role then upload the whole lot.

Any other time, we turn it off to reserve power.

>Second, are the slightly bigger issues, if I am required to have my camera on during interactions with citizens, how will this affect the way I interact with victims? Domestic Violence victims or sex crimes victims may not want to seek help if they know they're going to be recorded. These are matters which require a lot of discretion and confidentiality. And as the first responder, interviewing them and getting information before a detective arrives is very important. Where/how do we draw the line when it comes to these kinds of calls?

We have been advised not to record at sexual assaults. DV incidents are OK though, permitting they want you to record in their home. If not, turn it off. No problem. Honestly, when you're dealing with an incident you forget you're even wearing it!

>Thirdly, cameras on officers could severely limit a police officers discretion. If I give Tommy a break on a speeding ticket and only issue a warning, but I don't do the same to Sally, what's to say I'm not being fair and impartial? To avoid that scrutiny, I'm just going to have to ticket everyone. Guess I can't overlook the 50 year old retiree drinking a glass of wine on his front porch because that's drinking in public, I guess I'll have to issue him an arrest citation. Police officers have a wide range of discretion and it's important they be able to exercise it.

Generally you wouldn't use it in these situations. Besides, who is to tell you who you use your discretion with? It's your discretion for a reason. As long as you can justify it, why worry?

>Lastly, what's to stop a police department from just placing closed circuit cameras in busy parts of the city? I don't know about you, but I don't particularly like the idea of the government videotaping me without just cause.

Ha. You should come to England. All busy town centres have CCTV. They're usually owned by the council of that area, who have ties in with the Police.

To sum up, you are looking at it negatively. Don't look at it with the force trying to get you out the job, look at it in the sense that you go to an incident and at the end you can say "I did my job properly, and here is my evidence to prove it."

I like this cam, it's not high def but it's good for this situation.

We're going with Wolfcom Third Eye. Actually does 1080p, not the 720p I said, and pretty does everything else in the world beside that:

http://www.wolfcomusa.com/

It is big and bulky, but it also replaces your lapel microphone and has a screen on the back so you can check out the recordings almost instantly, which is nice. The bulk is also nice because if you forget to take it off be going to some kind of closed door administrative meeting that you shouldn't be recording, the fact your Wolfcom is still on your lapel is really obvious and someone can remind you.

I know the VieVu LE2 camera is also popular, but it only offers a 70 degree field of vision, compared to the Wolfcom's 120 degree field of vision. Also only 4 GB of storage and they run for 900 a unit. I'm not sure if they're popular because there is some sweet feature I'm missing or the Vievu sales guys are just good at selling overpriced hardware.

Muvi Veho cameras are also popular, they'll go up to 160 degrees field of vision if I recall correctly.

The Wolfcom though runs 975 a unit, whereas a Veho will start at ~125 and go up depending on what features you want or if you purchase extra batteries/SD cards. They're general use cameras so they lack some of the LEO specific features, like password protecting the video, but they're rugged and not so hard on the wallet if it is a personal expense. Just make your department is fine with you carrying one and you won't get tagged for wiretapping or illegal recordings.

Here is a picture of the Harness all fitted out. I used zip ties to mount everything, and to make safety restraints so the harness doesnt choke her, or get to tight around her stomach
This is the GPS is use, and this is the Camera I used. i also got the rubber gasket, and wrapped it in black electrical tape to make it more water proof.

costs me around $200 used. Looking into cameras I'm thinking of buying 4 of these and placing them in various angles. What do you think? that's $200 out of my $500 paycheck.

If you are looking for a body camera, something like this would work quite well. You can just clip it onto your clothing/bag and start it when you need it.

Something you could also consider carrying is a personal alarm like this. They are good because it would both draw the attention of anyone around you and it would also temporarily incapacitate any would-be attackers due to the shock of the piercing noise.

Other than that I can think only of things that everyone should be doing, and what it sounds like you are already doing, for their personal safety and security. Stick to well-lit streets at night even though cutting through that dark alley would save you five minutes on the walk home, etc.

Depending on the price limit/your budget, something like this looks like it might do the trick.

It's basically a video recorder that you don't have to hold in your hand. I've seen it used on top of helmets when skiing/snowboarding and to document experiences where it may not be very convenient to hold a camcorder.
