I think the key point to understand is that the continuous doesn't refer to the way you do things but the end state.

In the case of the darts the dart can land on any point on the dart board in a continuous fashion i.e. for any two points on the board the dart can land between them much like between any two numbers on the number line there are is an infinite series of numbers.

In the case of the coin toss the coin will either land heads up or tails up. There is no middle condition. Those are the only two distinct possibilities.

Here's the final point that might help bring those two examples into better contrast. An electronic dart board (see this image at Amazon and use the Zoom buttons to zoom in), which consists of a holey plastic "board" is also discrete because the darts in this game can only land in one of the holes in the board.

I might have confused you further. My apologies.

When I just wanted a regulation size cheapo board to practice on I ended up with a Viper 777 for ~$50.

It's been fine for me, registers every dart(though I rarely turn it on for practicing) and no more bounce outs than any other board I've used. But it's not great if you want to play with a bunch of friends. Handles 2 people fine but doesn't display everything in perfect detail, like it doesn't show what your individual round score was after all 3 darts. If you just want a cheap full-sized board to practice on it's great, if you want to play all night with friends spend some more money on one of Jake's suggestions.

Darts. You can always go for a higher score, try to hit only prime numbers, etc. Put on some music and play darts in your basement. Or find a pub with a cheap or free to play dartboard. You don't have to talk to anyone if you don't want to, you don't even need to buy a bunch of drinks. Its cheap to start playing, too. Entry level darts are about $15 bucks, and if you want to play at home, you can buy this or something like it for less than $50.
