I have the nest cam and it works great.
But - if money is really tight, a fake camera will work as a deterrent. This one is only $8 - and looks pretty legit. Put it in a really obvious place, maybe even a sign that says "you are on camera".

Its okay I have 2 security cameras at my gate. I live on 2 acres. The entire 2 acres are enclosed, and guarded by this. I also own 2 Pitbulls. They are EXTREMELY VICIOUS.
