Depending on your level of computer know-how (and fear of tinkering with electronics), this can be fixed. I went online and found some kits that fixed mine for at least 6 months before it crapped out and finally died. The RROD is caused by

  1. Overheating of the Xbox due to bad heat sink and ventilation of the GPU. (the very first model just had an aluminum heat sink and the 2nd model had a heat sink with an attached heat pipe).
  2. Poor ball soldering material used on the chip to the motherboard. Because of the poor cooling, the PCB would melt and deform and when it cooled, separated the chip from the PCB as tiny gaps formed.

The only true permanent way of fixing this is to reflow the chip to the board which required special materials and some skill.

A temporary/semi-permanent way of fixing it is to use a metal clamp backing to clamp the board and chip together with pressure. I bought this on Amazon:

It comes with instructions. It requires a bit of drilling but overall it's not terribly hard, I'd say an hour - two hours or so depending on y our familiarity with hardware. The first xbox unfortunately was very poorly made and had terrible cooling compared to the PS3 (I've taken apart both). If you're handy you can do this too!
