They use speaker wire so you're going to need an amp which is going to be most simple if plugged into a receiver. You can get them for cheap at recycling electronics stores or on Ebay/Craigslist. Yes, they're quite large.

If you want something relatively small here ya go

There will be some effects from placing speakers in a cubby. Mostly from the port if the speaker is rear ported. The cubby will act as a port extension, changing the amount of bass and the sound coming from the speakers, often negatively. The best thing to do is to get front ported speakers like these KEF Speakers.

If you're planning on doing just 2.1, and not 3 or 5 channels, look into micro stereo receivers like this Yamaha. Otherwise, almost all surround AVRs comply with a form factor. Marantz makes a line of slim receivers, but they're still 17 in. wide by 14-20 in. deep.

For that price, you may have to look on the used market. This was the cheapest new buy I could find, and it comes with a 20 wpc amplifier section; so it will need some efficient speakers to perform at its best. You may find CD boomboxes as well, but they're likely to sound rubbish, especially as your grandfather's coming from his hi-fi.
