I think that everyone has given good advice on the need for insulation underneath you which for the newbie is the easiest thing to be unaware of. If you have a sleeping pad and a tarp you have covered all your bases. You can always run a ridge line between your bike and something else if there aren't enough trees and at least you have shelter. there's a link to my cheapass hammock. Its not a fantastic ahmmock when compared to the nice ones, but it works, its easy and cheap enough to not worry about, and at that price its hard to argue with its quality.
