Bigtrak! You might remember having one of these in the early 80'sThis retro and cool programmable educational toy is a six-wheeled tank with a front mounted blue photon beam headlamp used for firingThe centre wheels are driven by two motors to allow change of directionUse the 23-button keypad to enter instructions for Bigtrak; Where do I want Bigtrak to go? In what direction? How many units will it take to reach my goal? When do I want Bigtrak to fire? Do I want Bigtrak to return to me along a different course? With a 16 command memory, Bigtrak will execute 16 commands in one sequence, e.g. 'go forward 5 lengths', 'pause', 'turn 30 degrees right', 'fire phaser' and so onThere is a 'repeat' instruction allowing simple loopsRequires 3 x D batteries (not included). Big Trak
It looks like someone has remade the Big Trak toy I remember from my youth. This could be fun:

Nowhere near as sophisticated as the above chassis, but similar in size but much cheaper is the Big Trak replica. IIRC there was a pi magazine article about using one of these.
I've still got an original Big Trak from the '80s. I think the major difference with the new ones is that the wheelbase has been stretched so there is less danger of little fingers being pinched.
Hefty motors and drive for a toy. Steering is by differential speed between the two sides. Speed/directionis blind -- no feedback, so it's not perfectly accurate.
Obtainable

Taking the computer class in grade shool on the Commodore Pet was quite interesting. We spent most of the class fast-forwarding or rewinding tapes, then instructing the computer to load the program. While we waited I recall that we programmed a Big Track, I don't know what other busy work the teacher gave up to fill that time.
The only 'good' software we used was the word-search generator that we used to create our own printed word-search games for each other.
