I have Zmodo. I really like them. Sometimes you can get them for 4 for 99.00. They do not have a mic and they are 720p. All mine are outdoor/indoor. Works great.

The only issue I've run into was the last time they wanted to update the firmware it bricked one of the cameras. Zmodo does have cloud storage (base is free, you'll potentially want more than that) but for ~$230 for eight cameras it's most likely the cheapest solution you'll find out there.

Questions:
Is your property fenced? That is generally the most practical way to keep out unwanted trespassers. If you have acreage, what about fencing off your house/workshop?
What sort of video system are you looking into? I've never HEARD of one costing $5,000 unless it's a commercial grade. You probably just need a few cameras that are motion activated and automatically send their footage to a cloud-based storage system. I do not believe those generally run more than $100 a piece, and I'm sure you can get them for much cheaper. I'm not the best person to ask on this, but here is a 4 camera system for ~$100.
Also, stop talking to your neighbors entirely. It's clear nothing good will come of that.
