Read those carefully before continuing to read this.

These devices use vacuum to act. The vacuum is controlled by electronic solenoids mounted to the back of the upper intake manifold (not far from the oil filter). Try unplugging and replugging them because sometimes it's just the contacts getting slightly oxidized over time. Also, it's free if you have skinny, noodley arms and don't need to pay a shop to access them like me. There are three solenoids in that location: SSV, VDI and SAIP. I don't remember the correct one but if you Google "site:rx8club.com ssv vdi solenoid diagram" (sans quotes), I bet you'll find something. (In fact, I just did and found this: https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tech-garage-22/connectors-rear-intake-manifold-167961/#post2891703 You're welcome.)

Have you had any work done to the car recently? Anything where somebody might have touched anything under the hood? Odds are, it's the solenoids but it could be a problem with the wiring, PCM, connector, or random gremlins bent on driving you insane. If somebody has been monkeying around (or if you have a rodent infestation) it could be wiring, in which case I wish you good luck on your journey to Hell.

It's possible that you have an electrical fault not specifically caused by the solenoids or wiring themselves. Get your battery and alternator checked at an Autozone or similar to make sure. Low output from either of those can cause random things sooo infuriating that you start to sympathize with Ted Kaczynski.

If it is the solenoids, you can pay full dealer price of ~$100 each for them OR you can do what I did...

I installed one of those to solve my SSV solenoid code (same problem with different valve) and it works perfectly. These are probably cheap Chinesium crap but they can fail four times before they cost more than the OEM part.

It's theoretically possible to change the solenoids without removing the UIM but it's a HUGE pain in the ass. Fortunately, removing the UIM is pretty easy. Remove the airbox, remove throttle body, disconnect vacuum hoses, disconnect fuel lines, remove 5 bolts and 2 nuts and you're done.

Wow, that sounded worse than it actually is.

For the record: the only reason I'm being helpful is because I'm drunk. Were I sober, I'd hit you with a LMGTFY link. Don't let anybody know I did this or I'll kill all your plants and dye your chinchilla's fur bright pink.

I know I can get the gasket from Advance Auto Parts for a buck or two. I'll probably grab it tomorrow when I go to get some Gumout Carb Cleaner. For anyone who might see this thread in the future, this EGR valve should fit any '99 Camry with a 4-cylinder engine and 4-speed transmission. Make sure you don't have a 5-speed because it looks like it's a different part. Here's the modulator as well.

I think I'm definitely going to put in the work and fix this problem myself. I like to tinker and (like you said) if I label stuff and take pictures, I'll be fine. I'd really love to know my car the way I know my computers. Thanks so much for the tip about Amazon, JonFin. You definitely motivated me to do the work.
