Are you sure it is coming from the wall? It looks like water is puddling in that corner when you shower. The amount of caulking and the visible damage is consistent with water simply coming from the tub.
Try using something like this to stop the water from leaking.
This is very normal for a tub with only a curtain.
Nalgene splashguards.
Have you ever tried walking while drinking from a Nalgene bottle?
This will prevent you from getting water all over your face. The "original" model (plastic) is much better than the "universal" one (rubber) because it's more rigid and doesn't fall into the Nalgene as often.
Found the exact ones sold be Ace.
That is a ridiculously good observation. I will check that out as soon as I get home.
And yes, these are already installed (which is primary cause for this confusion):

looks small for doors as well. if your only concern is water seepage try something like this first for a few bucks in the corners

Thanks for the reply. I was unaware of the Cement Board. Damn, wish they had used that. The house was built in 1980, so maybe that had something to do with them using the wrong material.
For now, I'm going to go with your quick fix suggestion of backer rod (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BQWOC0/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER), Silicon caulk & I'm going to buy a shower barrier like https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B002RT7BH2/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER to at least minimize the amount of water that will hit the drywall by the tub.
I just did this job in my kids bathroom.
Not a big deal, just do it right, and when you're finished either install a properly caulked sliding shower door (again, not a big deal or expense), or stick one of these splash guards on the tub.
Now that’s know what to look for, there are lots of options. I think this might be what I need that I can angle it. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LX16ZIH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_14i1Cb0MF9Y1B. And this one needs no adhesives: www.amazon.com/dp/B001BVMS2K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_gnj1CbQJS99A8 thanks again
