I just finished Diaspora: Return to Africa, which is a novel about a Kenyan woman coming home, dealing with her identity, and taking a turn into magical realism. I liked it pretty well, and I'm interested in seeing how the author develops in the future.

At the moment I'm in the middle of a collection of steampunk Southeast Asian stories, which I'm enjoying; I know it's a good collection when I get mad at at least one story because I want it to be a whole book XD

My to-read list is frankly terrifying, but I just read a good review of this Alyssa Cole novella, so I might try it next.

I will shamelessly self promote here. I just published a Regency Era fictional piece. It looks like romance but really is deeper than that as far as plot goes. Light on romance heavy on plot! All the other suggestions were awesome...just thought I might drop my own little work into the discussion. :)

Very, very soon. Readers won't wait around these days - they are so impatient, to the detriment of a lot of good plots and books, frankly - and the Amazon LookInside will slay you if your first paragraph doesn't grab them by the (lady)balls.

However, there are some "cheats" available:

  • start your book with a preview of a sexy scene, eg in Italics, acting as your front matter. Just as many books have in their inside covers, but put at underneath Chapter 1 (I did this with Tempting Her Teacher)
  • have the book start with the heroine fantasising about a sexy guy (who may merely look like the hero when she meets him, or it may be that's she's seen the hero from a distance and is fantasising about a future encounter - DON'T have fantasy man blond and hero dark. There needs to be a link - romance readers adore the idea of predestination or "fate")
  • if you're doing a "reunion romance" - never my cup of tea, but some readers (regretful divorcées?) adore them, you can start with a memory or dream of the relationship before it originally soured, or of their very first memory back then
  • actual flashback. It works a little differently to the "preview" section as it's more integrated into the chapter and book flow, and you won't be repeating it verbatim later on

Hi All -

I am a new author who released about a dozen ebooks this past month. I've made about 5 dollars in that time and am feeling very demotivated. Could any of you please take a look at my listings to see if I am making any huge mistakes? My ebooks are mostly short stories.

Proving the mask isn’t hiding a madman is probably hopeless, but preventing his past from destroying their love—may just be impossible...

Four years ago Paris was under siege by Erik the murderously vengeful Phantom of the Opera, who swore no one would come between him and his student, the breathtaking Christine Daaé. But a broken heart and a blast of conscience have changed him. Vowing never again to let his curse haunt the diva or the Opera Garnier, Erik is content for the world to believe he is dead. That is, until a good Samaritan begins leaving strange packages, awakening both his deepest desire and most forbidden fear—love.

Anna has no way to escape the memories of her past or her bonded servitude to the owners of the Opera Garnier. Ministering to the less fortunate is the only bright light in an otherwise dark existence. When her kind gesture brings her to the attention of the masked and mysterious Erik, her need for redemption became a desire for true acceptance. But Erik’s powerful obsession with Christine and a deadly con that puts everything she knows at risk pushes her to face terrifying choices.

Before lies and the legend of the “opera ghost” threaten the lives of any more people, Erik fights to control his demons and tame a heart torn between two women. Battling the nobleman determined to lock Erik away, Anna must help free Erik from his bonds of madness or once again seal his fate as The Phantom of the Opera…but saving him may just destroy her heart.

His Viking Bride by Olivia Norem, narrated by Greg Patmore. I wanted to try out a new romance author, and truth to be told, I like this story.
