If you are going bouldering anywhere you NEED a crash pad. Like seriously, this your safety, your health, AND for your sends. If you don't have any sort of protection you are risking a lot of things.

  1. You could hurt yourself or your partner in an unprotected fall.

  2. Along the same lines, you could very easily break your foot, leg, whatever and not be able to climb for months.

  3. You are not going to want to make any complex or risky moves if you don't have any protection and that is going to make it WAY less likely you will send anything.

Here is a link for a crash pad on Amazon and its only $150. If you can't afford that right now I would very strongly recommend waiting to climb outdoors until you can get at least one pad (generally you want to have 2).

I definitely understand wanting to get outside but you have to think about your safety above everything else. And if not for your safety at least think about the sends.

To answer your actual question... RRG is not a good place for bouldering (not saying there isn't routes but it just isn't well developed). Check out Mountain Project and look for boulder locations and routes near your area.

Another good option is a climbing chalk bag.

Not done so myself but, honestly, wouldn't. Crash pads have different construction and materials to a folding mattress which will make them much more effective for landing on than what you linked. Even if you thought about using it folded up, I'd be very wary in the lateral movement it might create.

For $142 you could get a useful crash pad.

Glad you are ok (sore but ok), I have the pull up bar that you attach to the frame with screws and it pulled out once. I now have something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Adjustable-Power-Multi-Function-Stands-Standing/dp/B0787XVY8V which I like a lot.

I also have this https://www.amazon.com/Metolius-Simulator-3D-Black-Red/dp/B00T8LLH68 which is screwed into the header board above a hallway.

Take you time healing, my back is screwed up and I've discovered that it's way worse than my screwup shoulders and knee and wrist and ...

The also sell balls that attach to the bars that are insanely hard.
They're cheap enough and small enough to throw in your gym bag.
You can use them for strict pull ups etc... I got these ones.
They're pretty solid for the money:

Liquid chalk is very not-messy. But honestly, it's kind of fun for the chalk to be a little messy. :)

I got a rock climber's chalk bag (this one, I think). It's a lot less expensive than liquid chalk in the long run, and isn't horribly messy. I buy bags of loose chalk and refill it when it runs low. Fits nicely in a ziplock bag for taking to the gym. I used liquid for a while, but it's relatively expensive, and it's a real bummer when the tube dries out or goes chunky. Liquid feels "stickier" than dry chalk, which can be kind of nice, but overall I think I prefer the bag.

If you're looking for a bouldering bag I recommend the Black Diamond Mondo. One of the very few bouldering bags that feature a magnetic closure (vs the traditional velcro or no closure) to prevent chalk spilling. Don't let the reviews dissuade you btw, all the negative ones are due to color choice.

I'm sure this has probably been asked a thousand times before, but I've gotten into climbing with a friend, and while I go bouldering multiple times a week by myself, I want to get more into taller climbing like with a harness

The local rock wall is at my university rec center (supposedly the tallest rock wall on a university campus at 55 ft high) so it's free for me to use (you do have to rent shoes and harnesses if you don't have them)

I have a pair of evolv defys as my climbing shoes (found them cheap on ebay) I was wondering if these are decent items for everything else I need

Carabiner: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003E2Z0TW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_F6W4ybC9TC2YT

Harness: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LU59ZFK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_2cX4ybNK3DENH

Belay Device: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019NUN0SQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_6dX4yb98K9C72

And chalk bag: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01K1545N6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_BfX4ybR1DMW7V

Is there anything else I'm missing? Is there anything I should change?

...So if you have a backyard with a rig you can train for the rig? Who would have thought? When people say "You can't train for that" what they usually mean implicitly is "unless you literally have one in your backyard". :)

For those expecting something different from this video, I can recommend you one of those:
https://www.amazon.com/ProSource-Multi-Grip-Chin-Up-Pull-Up-Doorway/dp/B002YQUP7Q/ref=sr_1_6?s=exercise-and-fitness&ie=UTF8&qid=1503981938&sr=1-6&keywords=pull+up+bar

They really fit into every doorway. I put a towel on it and do towel pull ups which are great for grip. If you want more versatility in objects there are also various special grip things that you can attach to any bar/rig:

It's not the same as having a rig but it's the closest you can get in a small apartment.

yup

They're those but smaller

u/beerglar · 2 pointsr/climbing

Like I said, I'm not totally sure, but I spent a little over $500 and I'm guessing that my friends spent between $100-200.

That "Grapes of Wrath" feature alone was $100 (but it's awesome): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D7ZUYL0/

I'm 6 months past an A2 tear and almost back to baseline. It is frustrating. Pegboard using "bombs" (see here) were good for power after the initial tear. I fully immobilized the finger with tape for a couple of months, then switched to this. You should be able to climb fairly hard open-handed, but crimps will shut you down for a while (I'm just starting to crimp again). Outside, I switched to trad and did a lot more traversing than usual indoors. You could try working towards some strength goals like 1 arm pull up or front levers. Finally, I kept some therapy puddy around to strengthen the pulley when I wasn't climbing.

Something else with a very similar shape (same price) would be a chalk bag for rock climbing!

Can you post a picture of the one in your gym?

Good points, makes sense. I've never used liquid chalk, it might be a good alternative, though I wonder if it would rub off on your tech. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07P38GMFK/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_t-imDb1DW9JE3

I have one of these, works great, and costs less than I spent on dinner last night. I mean yeah you could carry a bag full of chalk for cheaper. Or you could just forego chalk all together if saving money is your ultimate goal
