being a drummer, i may be partial, but there is an album by former Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart, titled Planet Drum. it's a great, drum filled concept album.

he toured the world and utilized percussion instruments from a wide variety of cultures. it's very interesting and deep.

i highly recommend it btw.

" "It had long been a dream of mine to bring together great drummers from around the world to make a recording based entirely on percussion," says Hart. " In 1991, that dream became reality." For the companion recording to his second book, Mickey Hart drew upon the stellar musical friendships he had made over several decades to make real his dream of a percussion masterwork, blending the talents and native instruments of percussion giants from five traditions into a celebratory classic.

His home in Petaluma, California was converted -- room by room -- into a recording facility wired for video as well as for sound, and recording sessions spanned several weeks in this comfortable, ultra-creative communal setting. The resulting album won the Grammy for Best World Music Album in the first year of that category's existence, and set the standard for world music as a genre. Winning numerous other critics' and audience polls, it continues to establish itself as a true perennial of world music in general and percussion genius in particular. "

Oh shit!! I forgot Dream of the Salmon Maiden by Ruth Mackenzie. It's based on the Kalevala (ancient Finnish pre-Christian epic poem). A truly incredible album.

This song is a good example of the mix of Finnish and English singing and the dynamic mix of instruments used.

Anime cons are generally the best place for Japanese music, vendors tend to mass import which drops prices a bit. For example I got this Shiina Ringo album for around $30 new.

  • The tropicalismo genre was a major revolution in Brazilian rock. My suggestion if you don't know it too well: the compilation album Tropicália Essentials. It includes many tracks by Caetano Veloso (also listen to his Transa album), Gilberto Gil, Os Mutantes, Gal Costa etc.

  • Lula Côrtes & Zé Ramalho - Paêbirú (psychedelic/progressive rock)

  • Secos & Molhados - Secos & Molhados (glam rock)

  • Jorge Ben - A Tabúa da Esmeralda (samba/MPB)

  • João Gilberto - Chega de saudade (bossa nova)

  • Stan Getz, João Gilberto & Antônio Carlos Jobim - Getz/Gilberto (bossa nova/jazz)

  • Los Hermanos - Ventura (alternative rock)

  • Yoñlu - A Society in Which No Tear Is Shed Is Inconceivably Mediocre (indie/lo fi/experimental). This Yoñlu was a guy who committed suicide in 2009 at 17 years. His music is incredibly deep and mature for his age.

I'm teaching myself Dutch, and my favourite way to do it is by listening to Dutch music. So I'd go for this CD in used condition :)
Also this thread is a great way of discovering new music!
