Target have great sales on diapers sometimes. And you get like $25 giftcards when you spend x amounts etc. Can save you a lot of money.

This is actually exactly what we've done for our nursery. We repaired a broken dresser and added a mat on top. They make one that has little grippy feet on the bottom and 2 straps you attach to the back of the dresser so it doesn't move. Pretty sure it's not going anywhere.
We just got this thing called a PooPoose (https://www.amazon.com/PooPoose-Wiggle-Diaper-Changing-Table/dp/B00DQED5YA) that definitely helped to prevent our kid from doing cartwheels during changing. It's a bit pricey but was worth it in our opinion.
We use a Poopoose changing pad that has a big Velcro strap in the middle so she doesn’t roll off, so I bet that would be helpful in keeping him contained a bit

Finally for our seaside themed lamp and side table we have an old side table that we inherited from family. We put some netting down and added seashells that we thrifted as well as a lamp with sand and little shells inside! Overall I was happy with how everything came out. Our house is over 200 years old so we had to work with a small room with a strange shape and a small budget. I am being induced Wednesday night so finished just in time! I hope you enjoyed!
We just got one of these and I bought 2 covers so that I would always have one, even on laundry day. It goes on top of the dresser, but you have to have one of those shorter longer ones. You won't be able to reach it if it's on a tall dresser.
We used this Munchkin one until LO outgrew it. Super easy to wipe down, never got a scratch or hole in it, and can be bolted down to the change table.

Until they get mobile, it really doesn't matter what you use. You don't need the straps and you don't need a purpose built cover, just throw an old towel on it. Once they start flipping and crawling away, this is the only thing that keeps my baby still. It's expensive but so worth it to eliminate the wrestling match that is change time.
Ok so a mom I know suggested this. Buy one of those big squishy change pads with a scooped center.
