I have a three-week old. Here's my very fresh advice.

A swaddling sleep sack is awesome. It's a straightjacket for newborns. Makes it easier to feed (hands don't get in the way), helps calm him/her down, and sleep longer. You can swaddle with just a small blanket, but our baby breaks out in no time. The sleep sack keeps her swaddled for much longer.

Don't buy a ton of newborn clothes. If you have lots of family, you may need to buy none. Put a hint in your announcement on facebook, or the email or whatever, that some baby clothes would be greatly appreciated. You'll get quite a lot. Send a family member to the local swap or big yardsale, and get even more cheap.

For a bassinet, we have this pack and play. It can be folded up in ~3 minutes, and it transforms to a crib later, so it will last a while.

Our hospital sent us home with some extra diapers, enough for 2 days. If yours does the same, that gives you time to run to the grocery store and buy a couple of packs of the same size. Don't go overboard, they grow quickly. This changing pad is cheap, and you can use it on the floor, table, bassinet, etc.

Don't be afraid to blatantly lean on any close by relatives for support. Cleaning, food, etc. They want to spend time with the baby, and they will help you out.

If the hospital has a lactation consultant and you're going with breastfeeding, try to make sure they stop by for at least one feeding. They're very knowledgeable and helped us out alot.

You're probably pretty terrified. I had 9 months to prepare and I wasn't sure I wanted to be a dad. It's amazing how quickly you will fall in love with your little poop machine. I can't stop staring into her little chubby face, and I can't wait until we get to the interactive stages. The care is time consuming, but it's not hard, you'll do fine.

We got this car seat and are happy with it easy to get into the car, easy to remove, you can buy extra bases for multiple cars. They make strollers that the car seat snaps into, so you don't have to take the baby out to swap.

My baby wants to be bouncing when she's awake. Constantly. The swing is only sufficient sometimes. A baby carrier is just the the solution for us. We wear her around and bounce on an exercise ball, or just walk around doing chores.

Before you leave the hospital you will need the carseat. Send a relative out to toy's-r-us to get it. You'll probably want the bassinet immediately too. Everything else you can acquire in the first two days. Save receipts and don't be afraid to return if the baby doesn't like it.

Plans for this room:

  • toss out oversized computer desk

  • empty bookshelf and replace with baby-appropriate books and decor.

  • remove all existing wall decorations, including DH’s deer heads, and paint walls a nice grey color.

  • move recliner from big sister’s room to here

  • add lamp

  • find dresser and move keekaroo changer our of sister’s room into here

  • clean out the closet and sort / put away the baby clothes

  • buy blackout curtains to make a nice, dark nap space

We found reusable ones! They have waterproofing material on one side, and the other side is like a towel. They work really well, and when they get dirty, I'd either throw them in with cloth diapers, or when we're not doing cloth diapers, just in with towels.

Edited to add: I can't find the exact ones I have, but these are similar! https://www.amazon.ca/Munchkin-Waterproof-Changing-Liner-3-Pack/dp/B009UPUJIY

So I had planned to finish this setup and post pictures during my two weeks off before my due date.. but then I went into labor on my second day off and here we are 8 weeks later!

We live in a 2BR/2BA apartment, but the other bedroom is for guests (in laws are here ATM) and my work from home office, and we definitely wanted to cosleep. The bedrooms are irritating small - 10x10 feet, but we managed to squeeze the essentials in.

I know a few people have commented about wishing they had space for a dedicated nursery, so I hope this gives you some ideas to show how it can work in a tight space!

*****

The Ikea Hemnes dresser holds our clothes with the exception of one of the small drawers which has LO's current clothes that fit. All the other sizes are in a storage box in the closet.

On the dresser top we have:

  • Taylor Salter 914-WHLKR Baby Toddler Scale : only accurate to the 0.5oz, but worth the $45 to me in the early weeks to check his weight once a week. I'll use it for eBay packages afterwards (the top part can come off)
  • hiccapop wipe warmer: LO cries hysterically during diaper changes, but half as much since we got this wipe warmer. Spoiled little guy! It's not perfect though. The Costco Kirkland wipes don't fit until you use up 15 wipes or so even after you take off the green dispenser part, and sometimes the wipes don't always dispense and you have to open the top to get them going again. We don't use the nightlight function
  • Keekeroo peanut changer ("Vanilla", but seriously just tan really): I got this for $90 instead of $130 from a sale I stumbled upon (I posted about it here when I got it). Easy to wipe up.

Behind the door, I got an organizer from the Container Store: I store our Muslin swaddling blankets and burp rags in the top four compartments, and the hamper for just LO's laundry. Has an odour out of the box, but it's fading.

We have the ubbi diaper pail in grey. We originally thought we could go without a dedicated diaper pail, because our kitchen garbage is literally three feet on the other side of the door in the kitchen, but after a few days we realized it was much easier to have the diaper receptacle closer to the changing area (esp with LO screaming bloody murder during his changes). We went with Ubbi because you can use regular garbage bags and its steel instead of plastic (so will not retain odours). It's not completely airtight, but it hasn't been a problem with breastfed baby poops (they don't smell bad even when we forget to close the latch).

Over by our queen bed, we have the Halo Bassinest and Dockatot. Yes, we put the Dockatot in the Halo (I added a picture that shows how closely it fits, since I was curious about it before I bought them), but lately, we've been bedsharing directly with the dockatot between me and DH in the bed. We don't have the Halo set up to swing over the bed though (you can't see LO from that height if you use the dockatot inside), we just have it set up to move closer and farther from the bed.

In front of my Ikea Hemnes nightstand, is a plastic tote bin and a basket with my Medela PISA breast pump and stuff. That area of the floor was not really accessible because of how we arranged the Halo, so it seemed like a good place to stash my pump. I pull up the basket onto the bed when I want to pump (just 1-2 times a week after a morning feed, if I feel like it).

The nightlight is from Mr Maria Designs (collaboration with LINE) - the small size. I was torn between this and the Miffy lamp. Definitely a splurge purchase, but it brings me joy (holla Konmari!) and I didn't care for any of the lamps on Amazon or the one from Ikea. I ordered it from Albee Baby and the 20% off code worked on it. The dimmer is stepless, and I keep it on the dimmest setting overnight so I can see baby for nursing in bed and changing diapers over at the Keekeroo.

I use these: Munchkin Waterproof Changing Pad Liners, 3 Count https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009UPUJIY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_vhIAzbGW3YEX8

One on the pack and play and one on the changing table. They wipe clean and can be washed too :)

u/Topher3001 · 7 pointsr/medicalschool

Practically:

Target have great sales on diapers sometimes. And you get like $25 giftcards when you spend x amounts etc. Can save you a lot of money.

Milk warmers are great. You shouldn't microwave, especially breast milk.

Start the baby on a regular schedule EARLY. We started on our son at 1 month, and by 4-5 months he was already sleeping from 8pm to 5 am.

Burp your baby! Gas is not fun for you or the little one.

White noise maker is great at putting baby to sleep, especially when they are young. If you rather not buy one, there are lots of youtube channels that has 8 hr of white noise. Put that on when baby fussy really helps.

Get this.

u/aloewke2853 · 5 pointsr/BabyBumps

Close, it’s actually the keekaroo!

u/vtlatria · 5 pointsr/BabyBumps

This is going to sound weird, but I really wish I took a before picture of my vagina.

I just checked my Amazon orders the week following my son's arrival and I bought:

3 packs of these waterproof pads, love these http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B009UPUJIY

A soft sleep nursing bra

Soothies (nipple gel pads) - amazing

u/delavenue · 5 pointsr/beyondthebump

I have the munchkin pad and I like it. Baby is 4 months old. The curvature is helpful as she likes grabbing her feet and rolling.

Simple is good. Cheaper is good. Some things it's helpful to go fancy for, but the changing pad doesn't need to be one of them

EDIT:

I dont use a waterproof liner. I have two covers similar to these so I can switch them out when they get peed on
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078Q49VN9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ZSw4DbX2QGBWP

And we use these underneath the butt. These are fantastic for changing and for burp clothes.

This is actually exactly what we've done for our nursery. We repaired a broken dresser and added a mat on top. They make one that has little grippy feet on the bottom and 2 straps you attach to the back of the dresser so it doesn't move. Pretty sure it's not going anywhere.

u/dreamgal042 · 4 pointsr/BabyBumps

The bassinet sheets I got for my son are listed as "for baby girl". They're grey and white chevron and polka dot. What?

Also we started buying clothes before we knew what we were having. Dinosaurs, blue, and green everywhere because I love blue and my husband loves dinosaurs. And dinosaurs are gender neutral.

u/azknight · 3 pointsr/daddit

We just got this thing called a PooPoose (https://www.amazon.com/PooPoose-Wiggle-Diaper-Changing-Table/dp/B00DQED5YA) that definitely helped to prevent our kid from doing cartwheels during changing. It's a bit pricey but was worth it in our opinion.

u/mmmmmMichaelScott · 3 pointsr/BabyBumps

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00KSW970Y/ref=sxts1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1482811096&sr=1

It's usually $100 and comes in many colors and can be found other places. My wife's sister has one and they love it because of the material. Easy to wipe off a mess.

u/iheartdogs86 · 3 pointsr/clothdiaps

We use a Poopoose changing pad that has a big Velcro strap in the middle so she doesn’t roll off, so I bet that would be helpful in keeping him contained a bit

This works great for changing our baby on the bed or the living room rug. We have one in our room and the living room since they’re so cheap.

Most of the items we have in our nursery are thrifted and we are doing cloth diapering so that we can have a lower environmental impact with our baby.

Top 5:

Changing pad sheets. These covers are super soft and I was a big fan of the pattern! We also got different sizes of these for our bassinet and pack and play sheets. https://www.amazon.com/Stretchy-Changing-Covers-BROLEX-Jersey-Balloons/dp/B07B488QB9/ref=asc_df_B07B488QB9/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=241960278479&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=13514455347440179493&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9003680&hvtargid=aud-801381245258%3Apla-452765505018&psc=1&th=1

Charcoal grey storage ottoman: we are keeping all of our extra linens and assorted items of that nature in here and it is strong enough to sit on! https://www.amazon.com/Seville-Classics-Foldable-Storage-Charcoal/dp/B00ROR7SYS

For the dresser/changing table we took an old wooden dresser and spruced it up with a coat of grey mineral paint and new hardware. Here is the knobs we picked: https://www.amazon.com/Artncraft-Painted-Ceramic-Cabinet-Drawer/dp/B01MFI13R0

You can’t have an ocean theme without some ocean themed decals for the wall! Most of the decor came from discount shops but we purchased these wall stickers from Amazon to add some more color. treepenguin Ocean Wall Decals for Kids Rooms - Under The Sea Fish Wall Decor - Bathroom Wall Stickers - Bedroom Bathtub Shower Sea Animal Decorations https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DWHDDVN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_SOvRzRK9ms9ir

Finally for our seaside themed lamp and side table we have an old side table that we inherited from family. We put some netting down and added seashells that we thrifted as well as a lamp with sand and little shells inside! This will be our nursing and reading station for the foreseeable future with the glider armchair purchased off Facebook marketplace from another mom. Overall I was happy with how everything came out. Our house is over 200 years old so we had to work with a small room with a strange shape and a small budget. I am being induced Wednesday night so finished just in time! I hope you enjoyed!

u/MurderMeMolly · 2 pointsr/BabyBumps

We put these liners on top of our changing table cover, they have saved us!

>Where the fuck am I supposed to change him, on the floor?

Take him out to the car, or carry a towel or blanket that you can put on the floor for him to lay on. You can even buy changing mats specially designed for travelling. I'm sorry, but if you think it is in any way acceptable to change your baby while other people in the room are trying to eat, then you're an asshole.

u/Trishlovesdolphins · 2 pointsr/Mommit

We just got one of these and I bought 2 covers so that I would always have one, even on laundry day. It goes on top of the dresser, but you have to have one of those shorter longer ones. You won't be able to reach it if it's on a tall dresser.

u/mrodzilla8 · 2 pointsr/predaddit

If you can swing it, I highly suggest getting a keekaroo peanut. It's the one thing I always recommend and will make life so much more enjoyable. No one wants to be changing a changing pad cover at 3 am. Cleanup is as easy as using a baby wipe.

u/geckospots · 2 pointsr/beyondthebump

We used this Munchkin one until LO outgrew it. Super easy to wipe down, never got a scratch or hole in it, and can be bolted down to the change table.

u/mmabpa · 1 pointr/IFParents

We're pretty big fans of washcloth baths, cause who has time for tiny infant tubs where you have to bend over and stress out your back. We lay her down on waterproof changing pads like this one and wipe her down with super saturated warm washcloths.

u/ADKitten · 1 pointr/beyondthebump

Chances are this is just a phase. Despite our house being warm, my son would throw a fit when we changed his diaper or got him undressed to take a bath/wipe him down. Then he started only fussing at night changes or when he was already upset, and now he only has a problem when he's tired or hungry and would really rather just take care of that first!

Something that helped us was getting a couple of these covers for the changing pad. They are sooooo soft and comfy! We literally saw a difference in the change before putting it on and the one after. :) YMMV, of course.

u/IWatchToSee · 1 pointr/Parenting

Something like the wiggle worm wrap
may help.

u/rosesol · 1 pointr/beyondthebump

I’m using a cosleeper with a similar sized mattress (same width and about 10 cm longer) and I’m using these bassinet sheets. They stretch to accommodate various sized oval bassinet mattresses.

ETA: I have the uppababy bassinet (it ended up not working out for us) so I put the sheets on the mattress.

u/adriCat · 1 pointr/beyondthebump

Thank you :) I just ordered a sheet for the mat! I got these ones!

u/blon-DD-e · 1 pointr/BabyBumps

That's the one! But it is a pad and a cover. Amazon has a Chevron cover.
https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0118X05QQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_eZPTBbM13P2D0

u/sometimesiamdead · 1 pointr/breakingmom

Ok so a mom I know suggested this. Buy one of those big squishy change pads with a scooped center.

Munchkin Secure Grip Changing Pad, White https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00O64QJOC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_tTTACbVFMXS5F

Put it in your bed and put baby in it. Don't strap them in.

u/LadyBubbleButt · 1 pointr/BabyBumps

Forgot to mention the changing pad - it's the Keekaroo Peanut Changer. We got it from a local diaper store, but it's available on Amazon. No pink but they do have raspberry. I think they are great since when they get dirty you just hose them off, no extra laundry to do.

http://www.amazon.com/Keekaroo-0130008KR-0001-Peanut-Changer-Raspberry/dp/B00KSW5KSM/ref=sr_1_6?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1407373401&sr=1-6&keywords=keekaroo+peanut+changer

u/LynnRic · 1 pointr/beyondthebump

I have the Poopoose which looks a lot like the Munchkin. I currently use it without the strap and just throw a bath towel on it for a liner. Sloped sides are good for the rolling babe. I have no complaints.

u/bismuth92 · 1 pointr/beyondthebump

Until they get mobile, it really doesn't matter what you use. You don't need the straps and you don't need a purpose built cover, just throw an old towel on it. Once they start flipping and crawling away, this is the only thing that keeps my baby still. It's expensive but so worth it to eliminate the wrestling match that is change time.

u/es88 · 1 pointr/BabyBumps

My daughter is 8 weeks old. We frequently change her on the floor in our living room or bedroom. I have a basket in each room with a bunch of diapers, pack of wipes, diaper rash cream and 2 waterproof liners. Trust me, the waterproof liners have come in handy! (http://www.amazon.com/Munchkin-Count-Waterproof-Changing-Liners/dp/B009UPUJIY/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1407038023&sr=1-1&keywords=munchkin+waterproof+changing+pad+liners+3+pack) My LO likes to pee in the 3 second interval between pulling the dirty diaper away and putting a fresh one underneath her. Also, poop explosions. Our carpet would be a mess without the liners.

u/WailersOnTheMoon · 0 pointsr/BabyBumps

We have an arms reach cosleeper and will be using this, which we bolted to the dresser, for changing:
