Take $25 of that and buy an electric burner/hot plate.

This one actually has two burners.

http://www.amazon.com/MaxiMatic-EDB-302BF-Cuisine-Electric-Double/dp/B00C8C5I8M/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1417626568&sr=8-3&keywords=hot+plate

Then buy 1 pan and 1 pot and you're all set

u/chairfairy · 7 pointsr/EatCheapAndHealthy

They could also use an electric (or gas, though the little gas cans might get expensive over time) hot plate. Then they can use normal skillets or pots to do whatever type of cooking.

Otherwise... here's hoping that OP has good grilling weather!

u/Earlgrey02 · 6 pointsr/Coffee

Might be time to consider transferring to a different school if they treat you that hellishly.

Also might be worth looking at getting a really crappy hot plate. It might serve multiple functions in a microwaveless/kithenless environment, and the worst thing that could happen is it burns your dorm down, which wouldn’t really be too much of a loss, it sounds.

u/Silly__Rabbit · 6 pointsr/EatCheapAndHealthy

Just get a hot plate/electric burner. You can then cook pasta, rice, stew, anything you can on an actual stovetop. $30 for a double burner on Amazon, but there are cheaper alternatives

My brother in law is extremely strict with his diet. Like, extremely strict. For the last 2 years he's eaten various portions of nothing but brown rice and kangaroo mince.

When he and my sister went to Hawaii for a holiday he took a very small electric fry-pan with him and used it to cook meat in their bedroom to keep up with his diet requirements.

Perhaps you could look at buying something like this. It's relatively inexpensive and would give you so many more options for cooking at 'home' that you otherwise would have. Get a frypan and pot while over there to go with it so you can still cook basic food like rice, chicken, stir-frys or anything that you would normally eat at home. If you could use it for your dinner and breakfast, it's better to keep 2 meals a day in check rather than none.

If it's any help I can share some of the measurements I've performed not too long ago on trying to figure out the best way to heat wort quickly and vigorously. Using a 1800 W Salton ID13150 induction plate (https://www.amazon.ca/Salton-ID1350-Portable-Induction-Cooktop/dp/B016BJDWNU), I was able to heat 4 gallons of water in a covered 5.5 gallons Anvil brew kettle at rates ranging between 0.9-1.2 °C (1.4-2 in Freedom units) per minute (overall average 1 °C/min). That meant I took water from room temperature (26°C/80F) to mashing range (~68 °C/154 F) in 40 minutes and to boiling in about 75 minutes. Maintaining a vigorous boil seemed to be the main issue, especially once I removed the cover. I was still able to boil off about 2 liters (half a gallon) after an hour.

I did a separate trial with 3L of water (1/5 of the 4 gallons) and found not too surprisingly that my average heating rate was 5 °C per min, or 5x what I measured with 4 gallons. So I'd guess 6 gallons would heat roughly at 0.66 °C/min, and thus would take almost two hours to boil. Estimating the boil-off would be more tricky and would probably be best to be estimated empirically. I do plan on buying insulating material to minimize heat losses, and on the long run I'd like to add in a heating stick for extra oomph, but hopefully all of that gives you a bit of an overview to compare to what you observe on your gas stove. That said, I'd be surprised if the induction plate was better than your stove.

This is killer and an unbeatable value.

Cast iron. Make a ton of bacon to begin seasoning. Eat all the bacon!

Two cast iron pans make an excellent panini press. Reheat your pizza in a dry, hot, covered skillet for wonderful crispy crust. Quickly nuking it beforehand helps.

This thing is also excellent. And cheap.

Spend the balance on great knives, a diamond steel, a microplane, tongs.

The induction burner, with a dutch oven makes a crock pot unnecessary. Braised foods kept me out of the dining hall for years.

The LA Shortrib (or LA Kalbi) is delicious. Get one of these bad boys (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07M7PMPND/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_7mSZDbXGPC3ME) and use it to cook LA Kalbi on your patio.

The Korean grapes are good too, they're in season right now. You have to eat them a certain way by sucking it out, don't eat the skin.

u/Edo526 · 2 pointsr/hookah

Maybe you got a cheap burner?

I use this one

Have had it since october and works like a charm

The best way I have come up with to heat water for a shower is warming water on a portable induction cooktop, then drop in a battery powered shower head Any ideas out there to heat water when wood campfire is not available? Without propane. Thanks!

u/VerbotenMaster · 2 pointsr/firewater

I've used one of these for my 10L still and it works great. Get's to a boil in under an hour at 1800W and produces fine brandy at 1200W.

u/certainlyheisenberg1 · 2 pointsr/Cooking

This is what they use in restaurants and function halls to do things like omelet stations (at brunches) or pasta stations (weddings, etc.).

You can use it indoors which is different from some of the camping stoves:

http://www.amazon.com/Sterno-50104-ActionStation-7000-BTU-Stainless/dp/B002MCYU4Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1413119914&sr=8-1&keywords=gas+omelet+stove

u/kermityfrog · 2 pointsr/AskCulinary

If you are not rolling in dough, I would get the cheaper oven, so that if it ever breaks, you can afford to replace it.

If you don't want an induction stove, I would get a glass topped ceramic/glass stove rather than the standard cheap metal coil ones.

This would give you a small oven + single stove for under $200. I can't find an affordable glass/ceramic cooktop with more than 1 burner.

These might be OK, but I have no experience with them: Oster, Maximatic - based on the price, maybe they will set your cute little cottage on fire.

u/abitbatty · 2 pointsr/GoRVing

I'm sorry if this is long, but

Tarps! If you're going to be in a hot area, you'll quickly find which areas of your RV will heat up the most. If you put tarps in strategic places around the outside of your RV, you can create shade and prevent it from heating up, which means not having to run the AC all the time.

If you can afford it, get a dehumidifier machine and put it in a dedicated spot! I live in a stationary 5th wheel and it gets super humid in here sometimes. If not, they sell these damp rid buckets that you can use for a while before you need to replace 'em--they work pretty well for the most part, but I think a dehumidifier would work best.

You may want to replace the locks on all your storage bay thingies (the ones that open from the outside), those use a stock key most people who own rvs have. To save on propane, you can get a little toaster oven with two burners! or just some standalone hotplates!

Make sure your toilet paper is septic safe (doesn't have to be RV specific! I use Charmin or the walmart version) and that you keep your black water tank

  • Partially full of water all the time (like 1/4 the way full) so stuff breaks down properly and you don't get TP clogs
  • The draining valve never gets left open even if you're permanently hosed into a sewer connection! This causes baaad clogs that are gross and hard to get rid of.
  • You should use the sewage tank treatment stuff so it doesn't get stinky and everything breaks down properly so you can dump the tank with ease! Definitely get these or something similar in large amounts and probably when you buy your toilet paper. They sell this stuff at Walmart!

    Optionaly:
  • You can replace your bathroom vent so sewage gas doesn't get blown back into your RV in windy conditions. That is not fun!

These kind of tension rods can be used for anything from storing pot and pan lids, to making a little makeshift towel rod in the bathroom or shower.

I recommend finding a good but decently large dish rack to dry dishes on that fits near your sink. I had a hard time finding one that fit so I got two small ones instead! They both sit in both/either sides of my kitchen sink so when I'm done with dishes, they actually don't take up counter space.

Good luck! It's interesting to live in a 5th wheel for sure!
u/amatijaca · 2 pointsr/Coffee

I got the 5 cup version from Oregon Glass (also available at Amazon) -

yama amazon but, I got the model from them that also included the yama propane burner . My wife has been ordered to stay away from anything connecting to coffee.. You may have to institute same kind of rule...

Well, again, it depends on how sophisticated the controls are. If you are willing to throw down $1500 for the Breville Control Freak, you can have control precise enough to use it as a sous vide cooker w/a pot of water on it. Another very nice unit (this is the one I have) is the Vollrath Mirage Pro, which has 100 power settings and a temp range of 80-460F. It holds a fairly constant temp once it's warmed up, although it tends to run about 10 degrees hotter than the setpoint. It is precise enough to melt chocolate (105F) without scorching and hold a constant simmer without the on/off, on/off problem of less expensive induction cookers.

As for full-sized induction cooktops, most of them come with 10 or 20 settings, which may not sound like a lot, but is far more than you get on other stoves (low-med low-med-med high-high) and have very good controls that will allow precise cooking temps--but probably not as precise as the Control Freak.

I hope that helps. The short answer is that yes, induction can give you more control than gas or electric--IF you're willing to pay for it.

Get one if these; won't burn your house down.

Chef's Star 1800W Portable Induction Cooktop Countertop Burner - 120V / 60Hz - Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01L2OH52S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_NyeYAb89M5QTH

You can also buy a single pot induction cooker - that, along with a toaster oven, would give you all of your cooking functionality.

u/Whitewhisky73 · 1 pointr/tea

Probably the heat source is close to this:

IR Countertop burner which works well to heat up water.

But man I like the wood surround.

u/tb21666 · 1 pointr/PressureCooking

I use a tall pot on my NU Wave Ti keeping the food bags far from the bottom & get fabulous results.

I suppose you could use a tall trivet or strainer of some sort that can handle the temp, but wouldn't put it under pressure & no more than 130ºF in such a small vessel (might cook too fast?) for maybe 2-3 hours.

Also, IME, reverse sear cannot touch a properly done sous vide cut with a razor thin bark torched to perfection.

u/Lifesophist · 1 pointr/slowcooking

Well, I don't find it a problem personally. But there are several alternatives. Finding an old slowcooker in a thrift store has been suggested, but how would you know how old as the new ones have been around awhile. Putting it in the oven at a low temperature is another idea, but the energy expense is ludicrous. Believe it not many years ago in the beginning the crockpot was a two part deally consisting of a hot plate and a crock with lid. I would say that might be the best solution, but even that might boil at some point as it is a constant heat source. You would need a thermostatically controlled heating source which brings us back to an oven. Keeping an oven on for 8 hours just seems wrong! Turns out there is such a thing as a thermostatically controlled hot plate! I may try this myself.

Check the charges to see how much is usage. My gas bill was always $23, $24, around that so I looked into it and I have to pay a $20 a month fee to keep my gas connected. So I was actually only using $3-4 a month.

Anyway, why don't you cancel your cooking gas? This will pay for itself in less than a year:

thank you very much

after doing more research, and because they are small portable units I can easily bring indoor after each use, I've almost narrowed my search to this NuWave PIC Pro Highest Powered Induction Cooktop 1800W

  • do you think it'll do for searing beef?

  • will it do so on regular 120V?

    thanks
u/TobiasKM · 1 pointr/funny

They're not really that expensive. More expensive than other solutions, but not "ultra expensive". Here in Denmark they're pretty common as well, my ex had induction in her one-room studentminded apartment.

As an example, you can get This for $62 at Amazon.

u/ThumbtacksHurt · 1 pointr/eBayGives

Can I recommend an induction unit instead of a griddle? It's safe enough that they're allowed in dorms, etc. I have one myself and the surface barely gets warm. When I use it and remove the pan I can immediately touch it without any problems. It's a bit pricey and you have to get compatible pans (if a magnet sticks to its bottom it works), but it's worth it.

Here's the Amazon link to the one I bought.

If your student doesn't win, maybe you can post to /r/Randomkindness or /r/dogecoin.

These electric heating elements work as a portable stovetop ya know? You can always cook on similar.

u/not_vulva · 1 pointr/hookah

Don't know about that one in particular, but I have this baby, and it's a fucking beast

u/FlaccidUnic0rn · 1 pointr/hookah

Something like this one?
Also I'm not too upset, I'm moving to a new apartment with an electric range stove VS the gas one I have right now. But I might consider an extra for parties/mobile.

That is the Yama Butane Burner. Coffee aficionados use them quite often for precision heating.
