Well for the past couple of years I've been doing more web development; it's very difficult to make a living playing music. Extremely. And I have a young son that I'm trying to remain in town for. Plus...swinging sticks until 2am for a room full of tourists has sort of lost it's luster; so the web thing is sustaining me for the moment. So glad I have that! Going to work at a "normal" job is just something I don't even think I'm capable of.

When I was 12 my career started in wedding bands and then I went on to playing clubs with rock bands. Mostly cover stuff. I left home (Jackson, MS) at 17 and moved to Tampa, FL to play with a band. It was largely hit/miss, as it was an original music group.

At 20 I moved to California and started to work on the club scene here, as well as recording albums. All I wanted to do was play drums, so that's what I put my premium on. I did not deal with the business stuff; in hindsight that's what I'd have done differently.

Over the past 20+ years I've recorded on about 150+ albums, one of which won a Grammy award. Did the grammy thing help? A little...my phone rings with better gigs but in the end, "Until you're walking on stage, the gig is not on".

I still travel with some of the bands I've played with in the past; This year I was in the UK and Italy with Earl Thomas and the Kings of Rhythm (Ike Turner's old band, of whom I'm a member) I'll be in Paris Jan. 24-29 at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Club and in Amsterdam Mar. 13-16 playing with Ernest Lane for a boogie woogie piano festival.

As far as signed goes...I've been in bands with development deals and can tell you that the first CD is the kiss of death. Add to that a guy who babysits the entire creative process and shoots down your idea for "what the label feels is best for the project"...and reminds that the "recording deal is merely a high-interest loan"...That'll suck the life from your muse if you allow it.

Nowadays there's so many groups out there, and many of them are rather good; music is indeed ubiquitous and it's hard to even GIVE YOUR STUFF AWAY. As a result it gets harder and harder to survive unless you've got a sturdy following.

One can make it, but really you have to be good at many things. I can play any style of music convincingly so if a jazz gig or a country gig or a blues gig calls in, that's some bread.

Overall this entire experience has taught me much. The most important thing I've learned is that "If you are doing what you truly are intended to do, then somehow you'll survive." Notice I said "survive". You may or may not get wealthy, but as far as playing music for what amounts to as a lifetime, that will bring you riches beyond the scope of mere money.

I've smoked hookahs with Bedouins in Saudi Arabia, jammed with legends, met Paul McCartney, lived in Asia for a bit, on a cruise ship in Alaska, and smelled more cigarette smoke and dog farts from a bunch of smelly guys crammed in a van for thousands of miles.

Music will keep you young, if not for the hustling one must do to survive!

Tie the two together with the incredible album Burnside on Burnside

To get a feel, I prefer to 'Best Of' type albums as a starter to get an idea of an artist's niche, as well as to see how they change over time. Any list will be incomplete. That said, in no particular order:

Howlin' Wolf - Memphis Days

Willie Dixon - The Chess Box

Elmore James - any box set or 'best of' will suffice to get a feel for this master

Muddy Waters - Mad Love

Sonny Boy Williamson - His Best - be careful, SBW may change your life :)

Old, new, or doesn't matter?

Edit: Start with these:

Cafe R&B

Buddy Guy

Pinetop Perkins

Muddy Waters

Howlin Wolf

B.B. King

Jonny Lang

A lot of the best blues artists recorded before LPs were a popular format, so I highly recommend checking out some compilations made by people who know their shit. Two to check out: Yazoo's "The Best There Ever Was" for the pre-war stuff, and Sun Records' Blues Collection for the more rockin', electric stuff that laid the ground for a lot of the blues you hear today.

Getting into blues is kind of like getting into metal. You can get a list of some popular names the exemplify a certain style or sound, but as you dig deeper you realize that there's a lot of variation to the genre. With blues it's usually based on region- Delta blues, Piedmont blues, Texas blues, Chicago blues, etc. Whatever you do, I implore you to look beyond Stevie Ray Vaughn and BB King.

  1. Always have a harmonica in your pocket. Always. You never know when you'll have 5 minutes to blow a tune.

  2. Go on walks through your neighborhood and play every night. It's the perfect practice environment (especially when you're just learning)... by the time anyone cares to look outside and see who's making the noise you'll already be down the street!

  3. Play any simple song you can and play it repetitively. I started with Amazing Grace, The Man on the Flying Trapeze, Dixie Land, and a bunch of church hymns I remember from when I was young. They aren't suppose to impress anyone... they're supposed to teach your mouth what happens when you blow through your harmonica. They will also teach your ear how to hear the harmonica and you'll get used to where the holes are and what the pitches are relative to one another.

  4. Don't only play slow songs.

  5. Don't only play fast songs.

  6. Change keys. Sometimes when you're practicing in a C, stop and play the exact same thing on an A. It will teach you the differences in how the keys play and it will help you further get used to the sounds and placement of the intervals.

  7. Don't be afraid of repetition. It's okay, for example, to practice a single train chug on a 6 block walk. Also, play scales often as warm-ups.

  8. Record yourself. I have recordings dating back to my first week on the harp. It's good to be able to listen to yourself and hear what you sound like. Also, you'll occasionally record a gem that's worth sharing with friends and Redditors.

  9. Search YouTube and try to emulate people you hear. Some favorites of mine are Sonny Terry, Buddy Greene and G Love.

  10. Even if you can't come close to copying them, you can listen to harp music all the time to get it stuck in your soul. I got a hold of a copy of A History of Blues Harmonica and never stopped listening to it. I also got heavily into listening to Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Big Walter, Howlin Wolf and the whole Chicago Blues scene.

  11. I almost forgot that when I first picked up a harp I went to the library and checked out Rock n' Blues Harmonica by John Gindick. It's as good an introduction to the harmonica as your going to get in a book.

  12. Blow, baby, blow! It is a quick learning curve but it won't feel like it sometimes. Just play and keep on playing!

Muddy Waters: The Anthology 1947-1972. It covers a lot of ground and there are so many classic fucking songs. If you like that, you can always move onto Hard Again, recorded with Johnny Winter as lead guitarist, which is a great way to make your way into Electric Blues. Hard Again demonstrates just how well Muddy Waters' blues translates into 70s-style hard rock, and shows just how much bands like The Rolling Stones learned from Muddy.. Plus, it includes the re-recorded version of "Mannish Boy," which may be the greatest thing ever put to wax.

You might want to check out the soundtrack to the movie Black Snake Moan (which features The Black Keys) and see if any of those artists strike your fancy. Of the artists on that album, I think I would most recommend Son House. Also, I think you would dig some John Lee Hooker.

Did you mean Deep Trout?
