Search Craigslist for a used treadmill. If it does not turn into a clothes rack after a few months, consider something more expensive.

I adore my Schwinn elliptical trainer.

No impact (I have bone degeneration as do a lot of my fellow guys around 40) great leg and some arm workout and the machine is really well built and sturdy.

about 600$

I myself was in a similar situation. You really need to find something that works for you. To every problem, there is a solution.

There are no commercial gyms in my immediate vicinity- making it harder for a fatty like me to get the motivation because I need to take a freaking bus. Also, walking was an option until a scary incident happened to me a few months ago that made me feel unsafe to walk around too long in my neighborhood. After 2 years of trying different methods (from my very first attempt at weight loss) I finally saved up and bought an elliptical (link below). I got it about three weeks ago- the last week into finals week so I didn't start it until a week later. I tried to make it a habit to work on it 30 min/day at high resistance. However, I saw that my motivation was still low and would go on it every 3 days. I hated that feeling of gasping for air because I was pushing myself hard. Then i figured out that if I combine my TV viewing with the elliptical at a brisk speed, I could easily do it every day. Lo and behold, I found a solution and am doing it every day about 2-3 times a day 20 min each = about 150 calories burned a day. While this isn't the same as building muscle, I am still losing pounds off my waist mainly because I've fixed my diet (which is its own difficult challenge).

What I'm trying to say is that you don't even need to buy an elliptical. Walk every day as much as you can as a start up. You might even get bored of walking so much at some point (maybe when your weight loss hits a plateau) and at that point you won't even care about how you look at the gym, you'll just want to keep on making progress. Progress is the best feeling ever and it is addicting.

Good luck! And feel free to ask me anymore questions about weight loss.

I ended up settling on this one, but got it for about $850 shipped from Best Buy: http://www.amazon.com/ProForm-PFEL59911-Proform-18-0-Elliptical/dp/B0068HMC5U

No real complaints (the fan & speakers are worthless). Actually there is one complaint, the heart rate monitor seems totally useless too (jumps around and is quite obviously wrong most of the time). Had it about 2 years now and it gets a few hours of use per week.

There is on chick at my gym that uses a stair/elliptical thing, not really sure what it is, it kind of acts like a smooth stair steppers or something... anyway, all she does is bounce back and forth between the two "stairs". It really is hard to describe... here is a link to something similar

Schwinn A40: I bought this elliptical after months of research and for the money it did not disappoint. The only front wheel 17' stride for under $300. Unless you are shorter then 5 feet anything under a 17' stride is not going to feel right. I have seen this same machine on local craiglists adds going for $100-175.

I am in the market for one too... I am looking at getting this one, but it would be great if I can get a second opinion.

I have a FreeMotion F 5.6 Freestrider Elliptical

It's easy on the joints and kicks my butt, cardiowise. You might be able to find one in a local gym. I own mine, and have used it almost everyday for about 4 years and it's still going. It's been a worthwhile investment for me, and I've definitely gotten my money's worth out of it.

>Clearly your saying he shouldn't be allowed to work out unless she is present.

Still not what I'm saying.

>Why not just put a slave collar on him and lead him about on a leash whenever he leaves the house?

Because that's not what I'm saying?

The home gym option is one I personally prefer, because people in gyms annoy me. I understand not everyone shares my perspective. It is an option to deal with this without conflict. Because he's already screwed up in a bunch of ways, as I noted. And this spares them the need to get into that.

If he's not interested in the easy solution, then at minimum he has to make her cease her behavior. And end the friendship if she won't stop her behavior (realistically when called out on it she will likely be offended and end the friendship herself anyway--women like this don't realize they're as subtle as a virgin during spring break).

And you're damn right I didn't buy Precor. I'm not obsessed with electronic functionalities; I just want something that matches my stride length and is reliable.

I bought this

And it works perfectly. Not the most advanced electronics but enough for me. But more importantly it hasn't broken down and I've had it for quite a long time.

Bought my weights--all high quality olympic steel weights--used off craigslist for a pittance.
