My 600 LB Life changed my mom's life. :)

At 5'1" she was over 250 lbs and is in desperate need of a left hip replacement right knee replacement (think bone on bone in both joints) and using a walker when she would get up. She would wear depends pads since it was so hard for her to get up to go to the bathroom in time. Surgeon said she was not a joint replacement candidate due to her size.

My mom and I would watch My 600 lb life and it would make some things about ourselves so glaringly obvious. First, all of the people on the show literally shovel food in their mouths, it is one perpetual motion they are scooping more and bring more to their mouth before they even chew and swallow the previous bite. It was such an exaggeration of our own habits that my mom and I could finally see what we did (although not as bad).

My mom today weighs 190 lbs. Considering she can't do any real physical exercise, this is all through diet with some 30-45 minute riding on this little desk elliptical I purchase for her https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AQ7ZNEA/ref=s9_simh_hd_bw_bEIW3_p200_d0_i2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-3&pf_rd_r=H20B1PMHBJ7RWEMYR1S1&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=6bec2713-1ee7-5cfa-ba20-af770471008d&pf_rd_i=3407771

This is the lowest she has been in decades. She wants to get to 175 before going back to the hip surgeon.

Has anyone used a little compact elliptical thing like this? I'd love for something compact that I can keep in my apartment for a little bit of cardio that doesn't require me jumping around my apartment while other people are sleeping. (I live in an area with terrible air quality, so I don't like going for runs near my apartment).

u/Bleed_Peroxide · 8 pointsr/fatlogic

I have a mini-elliptical that's all of 2 ft x 2 ft around. The thing doesn't require you to jostle the floor, and it's quiet.

People seem to think you need this elaborate gym set-up to exercise.

u/porkchoplover · 7 pointsr/xxfitness

If you want something really small, I bought one of these for my office and I liked it enough to buy one for home. You can adjust the resistance for it, though it's not gym quality. Just very small and affordable.

A stationary bike is another option, and if you're not a serious cyclist, you can get away with a cheap basic model too where you can manually turn the resistance with a knob.

Treadmills are one thing that I absolutely wouldn't buy a cheap or small model of though. I don't have experience with portable ones. Mine folds to save space, but it's still pretty big. However, I'm grateful that I splurged on an expensive model that will last for many miles.

u/thecalcographer · 7 pointsr/proED

I got this one, the Stamina InMotion Elliptical Trainer. It’s small and fits in a closet when I’m not using it. I like it because I can do a proper workout on it (according to my heart rate calculator, I can burn around 700 cal/hour on it), but I can also use it sitting down while I’m doing other things and burn calories more passively. There are also a bunch of upright ones on there with the arm workout part, which are bigger but make balance easier.

u/iloveavocados · 7 pointsr/TheGirlSurvivalGuide

I highly recommend this. I brought it into my office and have been on it every day for 30 minutes. Otherwise I just sit on my ass all day. Give this a thought.

u/yarnicles · 7 pointsr/TwoXChromosomes

Whenever I have complained about myself (mostly in terms of weight) my SO handles it exactly as I want him to. He reassures me that he thinks I am beautiful, but says that maybe we can look at reevaluating our diet, buying exercise equipment, etc... so that I can change if I want to. Its practical and comforting all at the same time. Recently he bought each of us a little elliptical trainer for our desks. Its nice that he supports me both in how I look now and how I want to look in the future.

Free: Gazelle Edge. I'm the second owner, but it's completely functional. Pickup in the Fan

u/sarah-bellum · 4 pointsr/SuperMorbidlyObese

I bought one from Amazon that was supposedly usable from a sitting or standing position. I found that it was incredibly awkward to use while sitting (the foot pedals weren't angled at all, so my ankles were constantly bent weirdly when I tried to use it sitting down). I tried rigging it up with wedges and stuff to make it work, but nothing made it better... I ended up selling it on facebook marketplace a few months ago because I never used it.

Edit: this is the one I bought.

u/nahcabmA · 3 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Alright RAoA, I'm going to be more honest with you tonight than I am with almost anyone in my life. I am fat. Technically, I am morbidly obese. I need to lose about 150 pounds before I can be anywhere near the weight I'm supposed to be.

The ugly truth

I was saving up for this before, but money has been hard to come by so my plans were indefinitely put on hold. Since that is over the price limit for this current contest, I'd really like this Pilates for Beginners kit.

u/brightmonkey · 3 pointsr/Fitness

I have this elliptical at work, I use it with my standing desk and it's great. It is supposed to be usable from a seated position as well, although I never use it that way. However, if you look at the promo video for it they show someone using it at a desk.

Hey friend, my mom has been having trouble with arthritis for a while (she's 67) and you know what has helped a lot? She got these portable pedaling things that don't have any resistance and uses them to move her joints around without load. In fact, her physical therapist recommended it because she needed a knee replacement. The knee replacement can only have the range of motion that she had at the time of surgery, you see, so she had to increase it somehow. She found that the pedal thing not only increased her range of motion in the damaged knee but also led to a lessening of her arthritis symptoms in the other knee and hips, probably by stimulating synovial fluid production (happens with movement) without the weight pushing at the inflamed joint.

She has one at work and one at home. You can put it under a desk or in front of a chair while you watch TV and just move your joints around. I am 30 and am finding that using it is kind of soothing to some knee pain and creakiness that I experience from time to time, especially when I'm not exercising regularly.

Here's a link to the one she has. Oh hey you can increase the resistance and it can be used while standing too, didn't know that. The angle is a little weird while sitting, you may have to prop up the front with some blocks (that's what she did). I realize this might not be for everyone, but people always recommend water exercise therapy for arthritis and this is the closest thing to it on dry land, I believe.

A bit over your budget, but nevertheless a pretty nice one! If you want a cheaper one, I'd check out some different websites and look at the customer reviews/ratings.

u/loseitbetty · 3 pointsr/loseit

Another treadmill is an option, or a stationary bike (I have this one and I like it, it's nothing fancy though), an elliptical, or a set of dumbbells that you can use for both strength and for added weight when doing an aerobic workout.

Of course there are others, but those are my suggestions. Look on Craigslist or something similar and see if you can get something for free or cheap, then you might be able to get more than one! Unless you're well off, then go straight for more than one from Amazon. ;)

u/ryudoadema · 3 pointsr/Vive

Whoa! What about something like this? https://smile.amazon.com/Stamina-InMotion-E1000-Compact-Strider/dp/B000VICRO8/ref=sr_1_4?s=sports-and-fitness&ie=UTF8&qid=1518982003&sr=1-4&keywords=eliptical+exercise+machine

I haven't played yet, so I don't know if that would be a no go due to having to turn or something...

u/Valendore · 2 pointsr/classicwow

i am buying a height adjustable table and I just bought an under desk Stamina InMotion Compact Strider

u/LevyWife · 2 pointsr/loseit

I can't really help you with the treadmill situation since I've never bought one but I did buy this last September and have gotten a lot of use out of it. I like it so much I use it every day. you would obviously not be walking on it but would use it more like an elliptical while standing up (though this takes a lot of balance and will really get your heart rate up) or an exercise bike while sitting down. I took a gamble because of the price and size and I'm glad I went for it.

u/k_jo_ · 2 pointsr/xxfitness

I have this one. I've had it for 2 years and love it!

u/bombast_forecast · 2 pointsr/loseit

Bouncy Bands and Under-desk Ellipticals are both ways to get your feet/legs moving while still typing, is that what you're looking for?

u/snugy_wumpkins · 2 pointsr/xxfitness

I have an under the desk elliptical.

Non-affiliated link:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000VICRO8/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1417885560&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SY200_QL40

And it's on sale!

I love it. It's easy to put together, it's quiet, it has a decent tensioner, and I love gaming and exercising, or watching movies and exercising. I have it on a little carpet so that I can drag it on my hardwood floors.

u/VivSavageGigante · 2 pointsr/AppleWatch

Heck, yeah I do! But does it even count if I don’t get a little picture that I can spin on my phone? Hardly.

As far as if you should do the same, I’d definitely recommend it. I got a little elliptical machine type thing off amazon and do (hopefully) around an hour on each morning. Park it in front of the TV, throw on an episode of Preacher or whatever, maybe finish off with something else to reach a full hour.

  8. Something that is not useful, but so beautiful you must have it. Triple heart necklace <3 [w]

  9. A movie everyone should watch at least once in their life. Why? Love Me If You Dare. Everyone should have more French film in their lives. It's a beautiful, artistic, funny, romantic movie. The main characters are hot.

  10. Something that would be useful when the zombies attack. Explain. Cast Iron is heavy! [w]

  11. Something that would have a profound impact on your life and help you to achieve your current goals. For exercise, way easier on my knees than the treadmill [w]

Fear cuts deeper than swords!

Grey Tribble!

Reminiscent of rain. If you turned a sound machine on and set it to "spring rain" and put this on you'd think your face was actually being caressed by gentle cooling drops of relaxing rain. :)

Weird food Haggis flavored chips. What? I love tasting new stuff. This intrigued me. :)

For my mom She loves horses. I once gave her an ornament with a horse on it that meant a lot to her. It's become sort of a tradition to get her an ornament as part of Christmas. This one is soo pretty. :)

Book! If you've watched the show I don't have to sell this too hard. :) I LOVE this show and really really want to read this book!

Less than $1. Technically... Digital delivery is a delivery method. It's not a food, polish, or anything to do with my hair. ;)

Cat related!

This key does nothing useful, but it looks awesome!

Across The Universe (movie). I had a friend who had the soundtrack. We listened to it pretty often. It's worth a watch just for the music alone, but it's a great watch. :)

Useful for zombies? Maybe? It's a knife that fits in your wallet like a credit card. It's at least a weapon that you could always have on you so you're ready at a moments notice. :) If only they made a credit card size folding flame thrower. ;)

Life changing. I need to be less fat... :/ This would definitely help.

Add on. My hedgehog loves these!

This is my second most expensive. My most expensive was the one for not being fat... lol. Before I used a wishlist I just added stuff to my cart and then saved it for later. This is the oldest item I've had stashed away. Every camping trip or competitive horse ride I went on with my mom/parents always involved sitting around the fire talking before heading off to bed. Whenever I get the chance to see them (we live in different states now) we still sit around a fire. This just reminds me of good times spent with family and essentially being home...

Bigger than a breadbox. For side table fishy times! :D

Smaller than a golfball. I'm obsessed with stars. I really love this ring. :)

Good smell! I bought the lotion and body spray on a whim when I was at the mall a while back. This stuff smells sooo good. It's like summer time!

Safe for work toy. These things look really neat. I saw them mentioned somewhere else and googled to see what they were. The video makes them look pretty cool. :)

I'm always late for class, but if I had a watch that I couldn't stop looking at I might just make it on time. ;)

Speaking of "can't stop looking at"... I'm obsessed with Doctor Who and David Tennant. :D

I added this to show someone else... I think it's crazy that they even make these. There's an appliance for everything! What beats fresh donuts anytime you want them? NOTHING! That's what... This is why I need that elliptical.. :P

Pm'd what I think is your name! :D

Oregon Cherries!

If you're not looking for something too too technical, you can find a little mini elliptical for a reasonable price online! Unless you're looking for something a bit less expensive?

u/s1ugg0 · 2 pointsr/Firefighting

I was 34 when I went through the academy. This did wonders for my knee health. I'm still sore after a search drill. But not like I was when I first joined up.

u/wondering_person · 2 pointsr/loseit

Hmmm....Understandable. Every gym I've ever used one at has been a life fitness one, but I don't see any prices on their website. Did you check craigslist for any used ones?

Also did you consider one of these things: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000AS7W2/metafilter-20/ref=nosim/

I haven't used one, so I don't know anything about that except that they're supposed to be low impact.

u/dookievizion · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

This is the one I want, still don't want to pay for it but I want it haha

u/aravichandran · 2 pointsr/Fitness

Maybe you could get one of these. It can be used standing up, but if that's too strenuous or not possible, you can get a solid workout sitting down, and it mimics many good parts of a bike.

u/lethesbramble · 2 pointsr/Fibromyalgia

I've had something similar under my desk for 2 years. I love it. I pedal for at least 2 hours a day while at work. I have a knee injury so my record of 6 hours can be a bit much.

The one I have is actually an eliptcal that can be turned around to be a pedal machine. I think this fits better under a desk because of the more forward motion of the legs instead of up and down.

  3. Food related & unusual - This makes me so happy.

  4. For the boyfriend - because he loved this game when he was younger and hasn't been able to find it since. [For the boyfriend's sister] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IXEAQ5Y/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3U384785C6ZFS&psc=1) - because she LOVES hedgehogs!

  5. A book you should read - This is about a German Shepherd adopted by the Royal Air Force during World War II.

  6. Less than a dollar - Had help from my boyfriend with this one. :)

  7. Dog related - YAS

  8. not useful but awesome - Now I want this!

  9. Movie everyone should watch at least once - Heart warming movie

  10. Useful for zombie attack - For cutting off their heads!

  11. Profound impact on my life & help achieve current goals - I desperately need to get in shape.

  12. Add-on item - WHY is this an add-on item? Ridiculous.

  13. Fandom related - Socks, the best way to support your fandom when you're at work and can't wear graphic t-shirts.

  14. Ridiculously priced

  15. Sharks or unicorns - both, with a bonus cat!

  16. Something that smells wonderful - Ahhh, sweet childhood!

  17. Toy that I wanted when I was a child - I wanted a razor scooter so bad when I was a kid, but never got one.

  18. Helpful for writers - I am definitely not a writer, but this seems like something that may help.

  19. Something related to my current obsession - I am currently OBSESSED with Shameless!

  20. Random & weird - I love bacon as much as the next person, but this is a bit too far...

I'll tell you this, one of the best things I've done for my health along with buying my Apple Watch is buying one of these.

It's not the fanciest piece of workout equipment, but it's helped me hit all my goals for several months solid, drop a good bit of weight, and also improve my cardiovascular health. It's quiet, so I can use it while the kids are sleeping, and because I have it set up in my living room, I can also use it while watching a show or two on Netflix. I'm not a big fan of running, because I don't have the discipline, but I always get at least 30 minutes on my elliptical.

You could get one of those mini ellipticals like this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VICRO8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I recently got one and I just set it on the floor, and you can just sit on the couch and do it with your feet (so it feels like being on one of those stationary bikes). It's really easy on the joints, and you can go as fast or slow as you want. It's a great way to get your heart rate up a little bit without having to go to a gym, and it's kind of like walking, but without the back pain you're experiencing, since you can do it sitting down. I usually turn on Netflix while I do it as a distraction.

From what little research I've done, I'd be ok with trying to negate the risk of vericose veins and lose the weight I've gotten from sitting.

However I'm looking into getting either one of these or one of these to keep my legs moving so the blood isn't allowed to pool. Would either of them help?

I know it doesn't look like it would be a good workout, but I have one of [these] (https://www.amazon.com/Stamina-InMotion-Compact-Strider-Cords/dp/B00BDMH10Q/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1485813098&sr=1-1&keywords=mini+elliptical+with+bands) in my office and you'd be shocked at how good of a workout it is! I got mine for under $100 from Dick's, with a coupon and free shipping.

You could also get on craigslist or local classifieds and see if anyone is selling a stationary bike for cheap. They don't take up a lot of space. Also, a good set of weights is great for HIIT. (I have this power block that i love, but it's a bit pricey.)

There are a lot of great ideas in here! I use some of them, but I also have a small pedal/elliptical thing under my desk that I can do short workouts with while I’m sitting at the computer - I use the ‘indoor cycle’ workout and do about 20 minutes at a time.

I notice you’re in the UK so you may have to poke around your Amazon to save on shipping because it’s heavy, but https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000VICRO8/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1 is the one I got. (Sorry for the raw link instead of one in the text, but I can’t find the formatting hints in the reddit app...)

u/DenverGuy42 · 1 pointr/Retire

yeah, it does for me. I walk a lot too - but I have heart issues which means when it gets cold (as it does in Colorado from time to time), I tend to not go out to exercise. Exercise + cold (restricts blood flow) = bad for me. Instead I have a small, free standing elliptical machine I use - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VICRO8/ - watch TV and elliptical away for exercise that day. In fact, I have two of them - one in my condo in town and one in my cabin in the mountains.

And I'll do projects in the house - something that needed fixing and I hadn't gotten to, working in the wood shop, a deep clean of something, whatever.

But yes, the weather definitely affects what I'm going to do. Above 40/45f you'll find me outside a lot. Under that, you'll find me mostly indoors - not exclusively, but mostly.

Fortunately in Colorado, it might be a low of 0 high of 30f one day and then in the 50's or 60's the next day ;) The cold comes, but doesn't stay for long periods (at least on the front range...) Then again, it could be 70f at lunch and 30f by dinner too (or vice versa)

Hey! I was looking for optimal workspace suggestions (I have a new home office that I need to sort out) and I saw this so I figured I'd answer- I have one of these bad boys:

https://www.amazon.com/FitDesk-Under-Desk-Elliptical/dp/B00Y1FRULM

Not that exact model, but the same idea. It helps prevent me from constantly getting up and walking around, because I can take my energy out on it. They do make a little noise, but that's probably more preferable to your wobbly monitor problem.

I got a little exercycle I can use while sitting on the couch - link - and I love it! It's far more comfortable than any recumbent bike I've used at the gym, does the same thing, and hardly takes up any space. The one I got is pretty expensive, but you can find ones that are much cheaper.

Yep, I have a stand-up desk with a wobble board, and I still feel antsy from time to time. I've also been looking into this in combination with the standing desk.

You could get an elliptical or a bike machine for a home machine.

I got this one:

But it's starting to make a weird clicking sound that I'm not too happy with.

  • Proper diet begins at the store. Keep unhealthy items out of your house (or in very limited quantities) to begin with. Don't make it convenient for yourself to eat unhealthy foods.

  • Limit eating packaged foods or meals at restaurants. Prepare your meals. This will also save you a lot of money

  • Portion control. I've seen it phrased this way before: "don't eat until you are full, eat until you are no longer hungry"

  • Regarding exercise: don't pick the best workout or the most efficient exercise. Pick an exercise that you enjoy and can make a permanent habit. If you hate running (for example) and make yourself do it, you'll run for a few months and then give up on it after a while

  • If you don't have a gym to go to, can't afford one, or just don't enjoy going (see previous point), figure out another way to get exercise into your daily routine. If you have physically active hobbies, make them a bigger part of your life. If you watch a lot of TV/movies or play a lot of video games, using a walking treadmill, exercise bike, or mini-elliptical can add exercise to your day without taking any time out of your day. I have lost a lot of weight by turning my /r/battlestations into an exercise station as well.

  • Whatever changes you make to lose weight need to be permanent. It doesn't do you much good to lose a bunch of weight only to gain it all back. Don't go on a diet, make a permanent change to your diet. Same goes for an exercise routine. Slow, but permanent, weight-loss is better than quick weight-loss that you can't keep off.

Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis When I was dead broke, man I couldn't picture this

I'm trying to save up for a piece of [exercise equipment] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000AS7W2/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=I1QPKMR72XJ5X0&colid=FNI1C5LMSDH1). This one in particular cause I've used this before at my father's. With me having lupus and a lot of joint pain, I need something to help me lose weight that isn't going to be hard on my knees. This isn't.

80 % Struggle: I ate SO MUCH chocolate. :( I bought a bag that has peanut butter cups, rolo's and kisses in it. :(

20% Success: I exercised for 2 hours and 45 mins to make up for all the chocolate I ate.

I hopped on my mini elliptical and just kept going until my feet hurt. I wasn't doing anything else so might as well. I do it while I watch TV. :) I love that thing so much!

Were I used to work as a janitor the treadmills said the same thing. Actually they can still handle people at that weight at a walking pace, but they have trouble keeping up with anything past a walk for heavier people.

Luckily they had the elliptical machines that were just the most awesome thing ever, I love elliptical OH MAN I get a girly hard on just thinking about working out on that 4,000$ beast

But now I'm unemployed and barely keeping the weight off as I look for a job, even though I walk almost everywhere, it doesn't offer the same cardio workout the elliptical did.

now I'm a sad sad 330 lb cat.

and I wonder if this thing works http://www.amazon.com/Stamina-55-1610-InMotion-Elliptical-Trainer/dp/B000VICRO8

> we would be better off to allow them to leave the dispatch area, walk around the block or something to not only exercise the body, but to clear the mind as well.

the thought of this is nice, but if you're halfway around the block on a stroll and shit goes down, you won't hear the radio traffic/phone ringing/whatever and it will take you more than a few minutes to get back. a treadmill in the next room means you can still hear everything that's going on in the office and get back to your console immediately if you need to.

if your dispatchers have said they aren't interested in treadmills, maybe ask them what they are interested in? our office has talked about under desk ellipticals (like this). we don't use foot pedals but i'd imagine those are small enough that they wouldn't be in the way too much.

I bought this elliptical.https://www.amazon.com/Stamina-InMotion-E1000-Compact-Strider/dp/B000VICRO8/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=2SA8JRC8MYR8E&keywords=stamina+inmotion+elliptical+machine&qid=1564248315&s=gateway&sprefix=stamina+%2Caps%2C139&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExNENEMUlHVkNZMVkmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA1MjMwNDMyWEw1SVhHQ0xWUFlaJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTEwMDE4MzgzRkxaNk5OTk40TUVLJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

Wow I dont know why the link is so long! Anyway, I wanted to work out at home because I was self conscious. Also I couldn't really afford a gym. This is a great elliptical for compact places. I had a really small apartment, so it it was perfect. I would start with about 45 minutes and go up as I started to get better aerobic health. I also did floor exercises about 4 days a week- sit ups, planks, squats. It was very simple and I felt great after. I ended up eventually going to a gym and running, then got into yoga. I lost about 60 pounds. I believe the key is to go slow and make small changes. Dont do anything too extreme. One thing at a time. Start with a workout you think you may enjoy. Then when you want a change from that, make a change.
