A wooden Bass comb.

http://www.amazon.com/Comb-Medium-Wood-Tooth-Brushes/dp/B00898EBXM

I got mine as a gift, and didn't know the price until I just searched for it. (over $5, woops). Any wooden comb I would recommend, though.

I cut my own hair all the time with this razor comb. Brush it into the style you want and then just comb through it. Super easy and it saves me cash until I can get into the salon. I actually get compliments when I cut my own hair which confuses me because I literally have little to no idea what I’m doing. The first couple times I was praying that I wouldn’t put a whole in my hair and now I’m just combing like a mad woman. I love it.

I did get racist vibes when they told me that. My afro is neat, trimmed, and moisturized. I'm heading into winter so I know I gotta add more moisture in to keep it looking supple too. I am looking into ornate headbands and flower crowns to wear.

I had such a hard time finding those combs IRL but Walgreens had them. I got mine from amazon before I saw them at Walgreens though. http://www.amazon.com/Scunci-Comb-Stretch-3-pack/dp/B004R7QNXK/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1415755736&sr=8-6&keywords=headband+comb

I use this when I want to slick it back.

These two to help with frizz and styling.

Also, this comb I've grown quite fond of, though I'm sure they're a dime a dozen.

Yep! A beard club can be a lot of fun and most of them run events to benefit a charity of their choosing, generally something local.

For balms you can easily get your hands on check out this list in no particular order just off the top of my head
Mountain Man Oils
Honest Amish
Beardilizer

There are countless of companies making these products. A search on amazon for beard balm will bring up a ton of options for you as well. The above are just a few that I have tried over the years and they were memorable enough to stick with me, obviously.

For a brush I have been using this simple Diane D8114

For a comb I use this Cricket Ultra Smooth Conditioning Rake

Ultimately it is up to you and what you prefer. I prefer a bit of a firmer balm.

For routine I condition every shower and wash 2-3 times a week. After the shower I towel dry and go about my business allowing my beard to dry naturally if I can (blow dry on cold days when you are in a rush if necessary).
Once dry I put in balm and let that soak in for a few minutes then I will add oil and start combing with the Cricket comb.
Once I am all combed up I have at it with the brush. Use it with a bit of a soft hand you don't want to smash your beard into your face.
At night I will do just balm or oil depending on how dry it is from the day and use the brush. At night I go a bit deeper with the brush to get to the skin.

Hope this helps!

I have short curly hair so it's hard to keep it all in place. I've found these circular hair combs to be the best for my hair

You could try a beard straightener.

Tools:

  • fingers
  • this comb
  • this brush
  • any brand of spray detangler
  • dry hair
  • someone who loves her dearly
  • snacks & movies
  • patience

The trick is to loosen what you can with your fingers, use the comb to pull out more, get in with the fingers again. Use the brush when you have a chunk of hair that’s freed from the mass. Work slowly. Use detangler as needed but otherwise keep the hair mostly dry — wet strands will stretch and break too easily. Thank powers that be red heads are genetically inclined to a slightly higher pain tolerance because it’s going to pull sometimes.

Getting this out is totally doable, but it’s gonna be a time-consuming bih. Source: successfully combed out a full head of twelve-year-old natural dreadlocks in 2A hair, and other younger sets on various hair types 1-3.

This kit has some nice wide tooth options..I use the short stubby one that fits in your hand. I start styling with a round brush to distribute. Then move to a regular comb to get it in place and then run the wide tooth or my hands through for the finished texture.

I used to use one similar to this one, which is meant to be kept in the shower: https://www.amazon.com/Wet-Brush-Shower-Flex-Count/dp/B06Y1MS48G?th=1

I recently switched to this detangling comb, though because it's more gentle on my hair: https://www.amazon.com/Conair-Comb-Shower-Size-Ounce/dp/B00CLLYURA

Please join us at /r/curlyhair and read the sidebar. You probably have a nice curl pattern, but daily shampooing is fucking your shit up.

All of your shampoos, conditioners, and products need to be sulfate and silicone free. Sulfates and silicones mess your curl pattern up and cause frizzing. Read the label, if it contains anything ending in -one, -cone, -xone, -ate, etc, it's not good.

No more shampooing daily. Shampoo twice a week or so. Use your sulfate-and-silicone-free-conditioner daily. Rinse ~80% of it out, you can leave in some conditioner. Always wash all shampoo out, and use conditioner after you do that.

You are banned from touching your hair with a Brush. You may use a wide-toothed-comb, but only in the shower, and only after you've put conditioner in your hair -- the conditioner allows you to detangle your hair without pulling strands out.
[Plug for this Wide tooth comb, this is the one I use and I really like it.]

No using towels to dry your hair. Towels have a repeating pattern of tiny fiber loops. These loops will pull at the cuticle of your hair, and destroys the curl pattern. So: go buy a pack of cheap ass white T-shirts, and those are your new hair towels. You don't have to completely dry your hair, it's best to use a T-shirt to mop up the soppy wet ends of the curl (which should have a small amount of conditioner that you didn't wash out, right?), and let it air dry.

Do this, then come post in /r/curlyhair in a few days to a week!!

The link posted already is solid. I also bought a set of 3, but actually I've found that if you only want to buy just one to start then you can get this one which is 10 dollars and has wider teeth on one side and finer teeth on the other half. Originally I didn't like the design but it is actually super functional because I can use the fine side for stache top lip and maybe even side burns. And use the wider part for the first passes through the sides. Plus the small mustache comb in the 3 pack is good, but it's much too small to be practical for me because I can only use it on my stache so I don't really need it.
All of the Kent combs are awesome, and if you have a longer beard then this portable comb or this rake comb will get deeper into your beard.

Honestly you can't really go wrong with Kent because even the fine toothed combs glide through my curly beard super easily especially when it's wet and/or has oil or balm in it.

This Byrd dude seems like a greedy cunt. Here's 10 combs for $1.59.

u/WakeUp_SmellTheAshes · 1 pointr/malehairadvice

I think you could pull off something similar. Take that pic into the barber so they can get a good feel for length. You will also need to take better care of your hair and beard.

I would shampoo and condition at most three times a week. The less the better. (I don't shampoo at all, but my hair is very thin and not greasy) And you will need to find some sort of product to put in after you shower to keep it at a healthy oil level... I saw a suggestion on MFA like three years ago for what movie stars use, but I can't find it again. I'm sure there's a top not thread or two with some good suggestions. Or you could ask your barber. The big thing is you don't want you hair to dry out.

As far as the beard, you need to trim the corners of you mustache and grow out the center a bit more (to match the picture, anyway) and keep the rest at whatever length you like. You will also want beard oil to keep it good looking. You can buy something branded on amazon or use pretty much any oil at the grocery store. I've used coconut oil and today I tried out safflower oil for the first time and I like it enough. I may also try jojoba oil in the next couple weeks.

You'll also maybe want combs? If so you can't beat this deal, though I should warn, some of them are very pointy.

If possible try and limit the amount you wash your hair allowing your hair to build oils naturally. Washing your hair too often can cause it to become brittle and dry. But if you are in the pool all the time then obviously wash it :) If you are looking for a more affordable shampoo and conditioner I really like Organix Vitamin E shampoo and conditioner. I spend lots of $$ on all things hair but this shampoo and conditioner is hands down my favorite and I have seen the best results. (link: https://www.amazon.com/OGX-Healing-Vitamin-Shampoo-Ounce/dp/B00QRSNW7W) Also you could be not distributing your shampoo and conditioner evenly and that is why the back of your head always feels gross. What has really helped me is when using a wide comb and comb your hair when you have conditioner on before rinsing it out. I like the wet brush comb because it is painless! (link: https://www.amazon.com/Wet-Comb-Detangling-Hair-Collection/dp/B00AWCNF9O). I would also recommend Moroccan oil after you wash your hair and allow it to air dry. Moroccan oil has really helped me keep my ends healthy and grow! (link: https://www.amazon.com/Moroccanoil-Hair-Treatment-3-4-Ounce/dp/B003YM5RA4/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1467073208&sr=1-1&keywords=moracon+hair+oil a little bit more expensive but a little goes a long way and will last months!) hope that helps!

THOU SHALT NOT COMB!

Lol, but seriously. Get yourself a wet comb, and only comb to detangle it in the shower where it's nice and wet. Once you're out of the shower, don't let a comb come anywhere near it. :-P

You can still get them on Amazon

I have no experience buying the materials, or hiring anyone to actually assemble this. Excluding the retracting mechanism for a moment. Let’s say I had $1000 dollars, is that enough design and replicate this comb with better materials, perhaps some engraving? Where would I even go or look to get it done?

As far as the body goes. I figured that would be the case. But there’s this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Afro-Fan-Pick-Black-Fist/dp/B0030UL056

It is fanned shaped with a longer handle. I wouldn’t mind beefing the handle of this one up to allow the them to be hidden. As the handle isn’t widened to accommodate more coverage when combing. So that semi-solves that.
How would they actually be pulled in and pushed out though? I’m willing to spend even more to figure this out and get it working.

u/RatherNotRegister · 1 pointr/curlyhair

I get clumps of tangles every once in a while. My solution is like /u/rosegrim's, except that before I detangle I coat my hair in conditioner. You know how with s2c they say to condition until your hair feels like seaweed? That's what I'm talking about. Then I start at the bottom and work the tangles out with my fingers. If it's really bad, I'll use a wide tooth pick like the one on the right, but I haven't had to in a bit.

Razor comb hair trims are super easy and difficult to notice mess-ups. I often use it even after I get haircuts to lighten up my super thick hair.
