In my last semester of high school, I took a financial literacy course that followed Dave Ramsey's guidelines for what he refers to as 'financial peace'. In combination with Buddhist sensibilities I picked up from a year of being intensely Buddhist in like, the tenth grade, I've come to recognize that mindful spending puts my priorities first. It's like I have two halves of myself: one is desperate for new purchases, the other fully recognizes that I have responsibilities with my money that, even though I'm young, I've made a commitment to - growing a savings account for emergencies when I'm not working during college, donating money to my church to help build a new sanctuary. These priorities are beginning to win out over my tendency to buy and buy and buy.

I think the reason I shop so intently is because I have a sheer, unadulterated love of beauty. In my mind, the type of clothes, the type of make-up, and the type of home decor I like is so bohemian, enchanting, ethereal, and exquisite. By the power of association, I feel like these items will also make me bohemian, enchanting, ethereal, and exquisite.

On top of that, I also love searching for discounted items I know are still retailing for full price. For instance, the All I Need Blouse from Free People is available at Nordstrom Rack for $69.97 and is full price at $168 on Free People's website. It found that top for almost $100 off! It's a great deal, right? In comparison, I guess so, but in reality, I still don't have $70 to spend on a shirt at the stage of my life I'm in.

I utilize shopping as a way to release creative emotions. I find items, and, in my head, style whole outfits around them; I aggressively bargain shop in the excitable heat of looking for what I love for less. At the same time, it's be a shameful amount of months since I've written a blog post or done a DIY, and I haven't even begun to figure out the YouTube channel I'm daydreaming of starting. I need to reinvest my creative energy into my actual creative pursuits. I have a lot of it, which I something I cherish about myself. I know I shouldn't let it languish staring at HauteLook.

There's also a blog I love called Free People for Less, of which the title is self-explanatory. I think I may start some sort of blog that accomplishes similar things, finding discounted bohemian clothing and natural beauty items and posting them so that even if I can't buy, I can help someone else do so.

There's always things I want that I don't need. Right now, Free People is running a sale where they have a a wide variety of bottoms and tops at or under $29.95. In my cart right now, I have the We the Free Mix It Stripe Tee in Ivory/Black, the Easy Girl Printed Top in Garnet, the David Bowie Tunic in White, and the Jump In Like Skirt in Hendrix. Are these all things I would wear? Absolutely, but I don't have the closet space or the spending money to buy them, so I'm holding out that this sale lasts the whole summer.

At the very top of my I Wear This In My Dreams wishlist is the Penny Lane Embroidered Vest from Spell Designs. I must have stared at this product listing a thousand times. It's about $300 USD, so it's impossibly out of my grasp, but how breathtaking is the embroidery? The colors? The craftsmanship? The faux fur?

However, here's what I'm actually saving for. I'll buy these products as soon as I have the money for them, which may be this month.

The Levi''s Wedgie Icon High Rise, in both of the colors offered, Classic Tint and Coyote Desert. Believe it or not, Free People is the most inexpensive place to purchase these jeans. I love the fit and the frayed hem. I have seriously discounted the amount of jeans I owned and am looking to invest in more high-quality jeans that will last me all of college and some time after.

The Instyler Max 2-Way Rotating Iron in Purple. I'm looking at this hair tool as a quality investment I can use on my new lob to style it the way that I want it, as well as have one single hot tool I can use for just about everything in college.

The Aloha Embroidered Bag from Spell Designs. This bag is something I need for college, to carry my laptop, my iPad, and maybe a binder to and from class around campus. While this bag is beautiful (fringe! embroidery! silk! peach! ivory!) and represents my style and sensibility very well, at $68 USD it's far less than similar bags I've been looking at purchasing.

Sorry for the ridiculously long response, but I'm having a lot of fun so far!

I forgot to add that the curling iron comes in two pieces and fits in your purse or can be left in your desk. I guess this kind of turned into a review.

Bonsai/Ikebana kit, including kenzan pin straightener

u/FLHCv2 · 4 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I use this every single day and have used it since it was delivered late April 2017. I bought it based off reviews but also international travel. The thing has worked flawlessly. I've been flat ironing my hair since high school and I'm 31 now. I've gone through a number of them and this is by far my favorite one.

Idk if it's BIFL or anything but almost two years and I haven't seen an inkling of a problem for only 50 dollars when I purchased it. It looks like this specific link might be discontinued but there are others out there it seems like.

I like my cheap iron.
Remington 1" Flat Iron with Pearl Ceramic Technology and Digital Controls, S9500 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003V249L0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_viNNAbPVBYGAS

I had the 2 inch version of this, loved it when I had long hair. Cut my hair shorter & needed a one inch iron. Husband got me a chi, didn't like the Chi as much even though it was a $100 iron. The temp wasn't adjustable, and my least favorite thing was the Chi has no auto shutoff. I was always worried about if I left it on and left the house. I like that the Remington has 60 minute auto shut off and I have peace of mind that even if I did leave it on, it won't be on all day. Got the 1 inch version. Use it more than my Chi.

u/Shannondoeshair · 2 pointsr/FancyFollicles

well great hair starts off with a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. I like Kenra or joico. Then using a good leave in conditioner as well as an oil to mend split ends, use a thermal protection before blow drying, kendra's blowdry spray, works wonders, i swear. use a ceramic flatiron or 1" - 1 and 1/4" curling iron or wand. This will make it not look as frizzy. section it off in 2 sections, curl bottom then sides and top. any pieces that still look frizzy, curl those again. Most important, use a really good deep conditioner/mask once to twice a week. You can also use coconut oil. on clean wet hair, towel dry a little bit but still damp, warm it up for like 2 seconds in the microwave, put on ends and leave on for about an hour. dont microwave deep conditioner/mask. These are just some examples, most hair care lines have the same stuff, KMS is a little bit cheaper and just as good.

Remington is my go-to heat tool brand. I have very similar hair - thick, wavy, prone to frizz. I bought this straightener a few years ago and it's fantastic. It's got good temperature control and gives great results: https://www.amazon.com/REMINGTON-Straightener-Controls-Settings-S9520/dp/B003V21WO2/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?crid=9JXXU0GRMMRQ&keywords=remington+flat+iron&qid=1573581635&sprefix=remington+flat%2Caps%2C248&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyQ1VXSlRXTE9SV1lKJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNDIxMTUzMVEzMEFSVlU2VVpOWiZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNDU2ODkwM0ZWTUxTOElMU0hVRyZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=

As far as products to combat dryness, look into the Shea Moisture line of products. They have a really great mask for dry hair - manuka honey & yogurt. I tried it out a few months ago when I was having trouble with dry hair and it was an absolute lifesaver. Another tip is to try and use sulfate-free and silicone-free products, and limit use of shampoo. You can co-wash with conditioner a few times a week, and shampoo about once a week. I've been doing that for a few weeks and I see a noticeable difference in the feel of my hair. You can check out r/curlyhair too - they have a lot of great info for people with thick, wavy/curly hair :)

I got an Instyler, it's pricy but I can smooth out, add waves or flip my hair in lightning speed. I wash my hair at night and then I use this in the morning.

Some have dual voltage built in. I have this mini straightener from Amazon and it does.

u/worstbarinphilly97 · 2 pointsr/raisedbynarcissists

Here it is—it’s kind of pricey (probably because it’s Kardashian brand, but I digress). The straightener works really well and there’s a cool feature where you can turn on the straighten and curl at the same time to do a wavy look. The curler is alright, I used it to go out the other night, but if you want tighter curls you’re better off getting a wand.

For years I used my roomie's chi. When we finally moved away from each other I was on the hunt for a cheap iron that could put me through until I could afford a chi. I bought this one and have ended up liking it more than the chi.

It gets just as hot, but has adjustable heat, same build quality, is better insulated than the unit my roomie had. Digital display and reasonably good locking mechanism, my hair never gets snagged. I don't think that I'm going to be upgrading any time soon :)

u/_purple_crayons_ · 1 pointr/TheGirlSurvivalGuide

I used to use Chi straighteners religiously but found this one on Amazon and love it. It's better than any other straightener I've used.

Thanks! I used [these] (http://imgur.com/a7Gmysb) to finish it. I sand through 600, then applied [EEE Ultrashine] (http://amzn.com/B001DT5H7I) follow-ed up with a few coats of [Mylands High Build Friction Polish] (http://amzn.com/B004BL7X4U).

Oh, thanks for the cool contest VKitty!

I finally bit the bullet today and after 40 years of fighting gray hair, decided no more dying! I waited until about 3-4 inches of silver/gray roots grew out, and went and got an uber-short pixie cut. I freaking love it. So liberating to no longer by L'Oreal's slave every two weeks!

Either of these two items would be hugely helpful with the upkeep!

Jhirmack Silver Brightening Shampoo to keep the silver from yellowing, can be found on my Under $10 WL.

Or, this mini titanium straightening iron to get rid of the random curls and cowlicks, if you're feeling super generous. It can be found on my default WL.

I freaking love the song, "The Old Apartment".

Thanks again for the contest! <3

  1. Transcribing what interviewees said in this documentary film to get them to sign a damn film release.

  2. I'm doing this because apparently some big wigs have issues with releasing their filmed interviews even though THEY SPOKE THESE WORDS. So I have to remind them of the things they said. Ugh

  3. Tomorrow I am going to answer calls at my parent's office from 9 to 5 (while they are out of town) and then hopefully climb Stone Mountain and grab a drink with an old friend.

  4. One long term goal is to find a job and decent place to live in Los Angeles. Hopefully in August :)

  5. On my desk is my Mac laptop, some five gum, a pen, a subway cup with unsweet tea in it, a time sheet, and an decorative alligator sculpture I got my mom in New Orleans.

  6. There are no books in this office :(

  8. I had a tuna salad from subway after my dentist appointment this afternoon.

  9. The last book I read was the new JK Rowling book but I didn't finish it because finals happened. I like it so far... it's just so hard to keep up with all the plot lines. I feel like I need to take notes.

  10. I reread The Perks of Being a Wallflower after I watched the movie. Still as good as I remember it from middle school :)

I had the original Chi for like 10 years and eventually the wire had broken so much that I decided it was a fire hazard. There was electrical tape involved. I've heard the newer Chi's are not nearly as good.

I have this straightener now and I love it. $30 and works perfectly. Super lightweight too.

**Edit - it was $20.99 when I got it but looks like it's about $30 now. Still worth it.

u/curl_on · 1 pointr/curlyhair

If I want a particularly long curly day, I do have clip in extensions that match my color/texture (fine instead coarse which is what a lot of cheaper extensions end up being) and I've curled the extensions with heat to match my curl pattern. My curls aren't quite as tight as yours (mine are more 3b), but it's pretty darn close. It's not perfect, but it works. It's a bit of trick though because it obviously adds volume to your natural hair, and to do clip-ins you have to separate curls to get them in, so you might end up with some frizzies in your natural hair.

This isn't the exact straightener I use to curl the extensions, but it's pretty similar. Really any half inch tourmaline or ceramic straightener should do it. All you have to do it curl it like a ribbon and your natural ringlets should match pretty close to the curl pattern.
https://www.amazon.com/Professional-Travel-Tourmaline-Ceramic-Straightener/dp/B00SKWO0OC/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1524680876&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=travel+straightener&psc=1#customerReviews

The clip in extensions don't have to be washed often/ever depending on how much you use them. JUST MAKE SURE you get real human hair. If you try to use any heat onto synthetic hair it will melt.

Not sure if you were looking for less hassle or more length, but hopefully this helps?

Very happy with the purchase. I use for a year now, curls are well kept for more than one day. Since the temperature is regulated, it is suitable for different types of hair - my daughter do curls. The timer gives the opportunity, without overblown and overbearing, with pleasure to create beauty!

I'm going on 4 years now and here is my daily routine:

  1. shower/brush teeth/wet stuff/etc
  2. using a comb and a blow dryer on high heat/low fan, heat my stache and gently pull the comb through it to remove debris
  3. using a moustache/beard brush and the blow dryer on high heat/low fan, I brush each side out vigourously
  4. I use a mini flat iron http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001T0HHAG before it gets completely hot to iron the kinked hairs into a nice orderly curl
  5. I heat a bit of handlebars or wild oregon hair moustache wax with the blow dryer and apply it to my moustache
  6. enjoy compliments
u/amwolf2 · 0 pointsr/HaircareScience

I got this heat comb/brush thing on Amazon and I love it. I have never been good at using a flat iron, but this thing is so much easier and the result is not stick straight hair, but just smoother hair.

Between this and a good expensive hair dryer that drys super fast, this cut down my styling time by 20-30 minutes at least!

It was cheaper when I bought it, but I would buy it again at this price. It’s worth it!
