You're probably already aware of this, but just incase you're not, it looks like Viz is actually working on releasing a "Perfect Edition" hardcover omnibus for 'The Drifting Classroom' starting this October. Amazon has some details about the book listed on their site: https://www.amazon.com/Drifting-Classroom-Perfect-Vol-Edit/dp/197470937X/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=the+drifting+classroom&qid=1555021892&s=gateway&sr=8-1

Luckily for me, they were a random bookstore buy :P
Here's the links to amazon, and they're the real deal. I LOVE the series, and the art is magnificent. But maybe you should look at a few more places for cheaper books, but at least you know what they should look like :D

Locke and Key by Joe Hill: one of the best horror comics in recent years.

The Haunter of the Dark: black and white adaptations of Lovecraft

Uzumaki by Junji Ito

The Courtyard and Neonomicon: Alan Moore's take on the Lovecraft mythos. Neonomicon is tough to recommend due to extreme adult situations.

I bought 'Shiver' on Amazon, which is a collection of 9 Junji Ito stories. The first story i really dislike, so I count it as 8. It includes this story about the oil and a few others that are considered Ito classics. Would recommend.

Sounds interesting. I had the exact same assignment from my Abnormal Psych prof last semester. I did mine on the manga Freesia by Jiro Mastsumoto about the main character who I diagnosed as disorganized schizophrenia. It was really fun. It must be a popular assignment. I don't know what your preferences are but I'll give it a shot.

Stainless, A Modern Romance by Todd Grimson Main characters: Depression, PTSD, you can argue a few personality disorders for the antagonist

The Child Thief by Brom A number of the main characters (and there are a lot), have abnormal mental functions that are fascinating. I can confidently write my own term paper on how the title character shows extreme antisocial behavior. Fair warning, the book is pretty gory.

Goth: A Novel of Horror by Otsuichi. Really short. Both main characters are messed up.

Death Note: Another Note by NisiOisiN Even shorter. Look into the psychotic disorders.

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

Frankenstein by Mary Shelly

I've been curious about reading Gantz as well ever since I saw Gantz0 on Netflix. Apparently Dark Horse is reprinting the manga series in big omnibus editions in a couple months:

Seven Seas is actually going to be releasing it in English next year! Here is a link to the first volume on amazon.

How about boxed sets? Four volumes to a box. Unfortunately, they are not out yet but I linked the Amazon pages below in case you're interested-

Boxed Set 1 - Volumes 1 to 4

Boxed Set 2 - Volumes 5 to 8

Boxed Set 3 - Volumes 9 to 12

Boxed Set 4 - Volumes 13 to 16

A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray is probably Gothic enough to count as horror. If Gothic works, The Dreaming manga is another option.

The D.Gray-man manga also has a distinct Halloween aesthetic with jack-o-lanterns, etc.

u/spectrasonic · 2 pointsr/knightsofsidonia

Some places where you can buy the manga:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/1935654802/ref=cm_sw_su_dp
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/knights-of-sidonia-volume-1-tsutomu-nihei/1111503497
http://www.walmart.com/ip/29267434

Volumes 1-14 are officially released in English. The last volume, 15, releases April 26th.

Even though season 2 ends at chapter 50, I recommend you start at the beginning. The anime strays a bit from the manga. The manga is more in-depth with the world-building and relationships, for instance, learning about the smells of Sidonia.

No Longer Human is set to release in December (I've also heard October)

I really liked Neonomicon.

Totto-chan is a delightful, light-hearted read despite the backdrop of WWII. The publishing of the Kino no Tabi series is a bit up in the air, but I thoroughly enjoyed the first one. I highly recommend The Woman in the Dunes; it is a beautiful work. I loved the first volume of Ballad of a Shinigami. Goth is a personal favorite, but it's horror and can get a tad gory. I would encourage you to give it a try though, it has altered my point of view quite a bit.

While I have not read any, I have heard good things about Brave Story, Kazuo Ishiguro (The Remains of the Day, Never Let Me Go) and Kenzaburo Oe (The Changling). I have heard Botchan is popular in Japan.

As a tip, search for Japanese light novels. They are "light" in the sense that they are the literature equivalent of manga, often with many volumes. They were really popular a few years back, but I am not sure if they are still being published. Check out Amazon for some old Tokyopop, Seven Seas, and Yen Press books. Also, Spice and Wolf.

Terra Formars 5 has been price match on Amazon.

You ALL still have Zoidberg!

I finished the first installment of Uzumaki two days ago. Since it's a horror manga I finished it in one day but it's so creepy and makes you so curious of what could possibly happen next.

Next installment is on my book list :3

You mean hardcover volumes and/or omnibus?

First things that come to mind are (these are all hardcovers)

Nausicaa box set (2 hardcover books for all 7 volumes)

Gundam: The Origin 2in1 hardcover volumes. 8 out 12 total out. Volume 12 comes out in December. Although I know Japan did get a Aizōban release so not sure if much other than the covers are different.

Vinland Saga - 2 in 1 hardcover volumes. 5 out more coming out later this year.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Part 1 - Phantom Blood - Volume 1 Hardcover although only 1 volume out at the moment. Volume 2 in May and Volume 3 in August.

Highschool of the Dead Color Omnibus 2 books first one has the first 4 volumes 2nd one has the next 3 all in full color.

Nijigahara Holograph by Inio Asano

Wandering Son (Hourou Musuko)

The Angel of Elhamburg by Aki this one just came out this week

A Bride's Story (Otoyomegatari) with Emma getting a hardcover release soon

I am sure there are more but these are the ones that come to mind at the moment.

u/Animes2Deep4U · 1 pointr/LightNovels

It has no official release, so the online fan translations I linked are the only ones that exist for it.

A single light novel volume that is licensed that you can buy though is [Bakemono no Ko] (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Boy-Beast-Mamoru-Hosoda/dp/0316270601/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1458357939&sr=8-2&keywords=the+boy+and+the+beast) in that case. And Another

Project Itoh's novels Harmony & Genocidal Organ are also good.

u/FindxThexWay · 1 pointr/manga

I actually looked into this and for some series you can do what you described. Take Aku no Hana for instance. You can preorder all the English digital volumes on Amazon for $7.99 each and it will load them onto your Kindle for you when Kodansha releases them.

u/GogEguGem · 1 pointr/gantz

It's sold as separate volumes which would be pricey as hell even if they weren't out of print, and as Omnibus (3-in-1) volumes which is more affordable but only 2 out of ~13 such volumes are released and their release schedule is slow as fuck (like, half a year between each volume).

The only realistic option is reading online tbh, with the best reading site by far being mangadex: https://mangadex.org/chapter/69173/1

This is obviously the unofficial translation, and the quality goes up and down as different groups took turn translating it. The third Omnibus edition is released the 28:th May which is soon enough, so you could pick up the three first Omnibus editions and start reading the less reliable online translations where the physical editions left off.

A Great and Terrible Beauty is about a Victorian girl's boarding school and a creepy secret world. It's part of a trilogy, but the book easily stands on its own.

If you don't mind manga, The Dreaming might fit. It's about modern twins at a Victorian school full of secrets in the Australian outback.
