I didn't build it, it's called an overhead stirrer. They sell them for use in labs, looked like it would work though, and it did. Here's the one I bought, pretty reasonable at $80 considering the time savings if I'm making yogurt every week.

Just a heads up, this stirrer is straight from China and isn't finished well. It works great, but required 10 minutes or so of sanding/filing/tinkering after unboxing. It also comes with no assembly or operating instructions, though there's nothing that's not obvious about it all.

I don't like the stirring paddle it comes with either, but it totally works. And the collet takes a 6mm rod so if you're handy with metal you can just order some stainless and make your own.

Check out this mixer it is only $190 on Amazon, compared to $670 from fisher.

I agree with the other response you got pointing to the Pool / Spa forum. Trouble Free Pool forum is also a good one.

I will point out that the test kit they linked to doesn't include CYA tests.
This test kit does: https://www.amazon.com/TAYLOR-TECHNOLOGIES-INC-K-2006-CHLORINE/dp/B004BGF7TI/

the next step up from that is the king daddy kit that I highly recommend:

Unless money is really tight, to yourself a favor and get this. You won't regret it:

Finally, these are very helpful in understanding the state of your water, and what you should do to get it in range if it is out of range:

or if you want a mobile app, install "Pool Math" by Trouble Free Pool (TFP).

I LOVE my Mash & Boil, especially after I upgraded it. Here are the things I bought for it to do my upgrade. It’s a good amount of money up front but worth it.

The plate doesn't vibrate - you put a stir bar in the beaker, and it is spun around magnetically, like this.

In fact, some kind of magnetic system like this would seem to be a far better way of doing this than the original mug - the motor/battery could be in a removable base, so the top part could be put in the dishwasher. Hrrrmmm..

As far as I know, and this thread seems to agree, the answer is no. However, one of the cheapest ways to break things into really tiny particles is ball milling. All you need is a nalgene bottle (what we use in the lab), some milling media and a rotary mill. Put the stuff in, turn the machine on, tiny particles are formed. The trickiest part is cleaning the powder off the milling media, but reductions are not that difficult.

EDIT: Aw man, autowikibot and pricezombie on the same post, can we get them to fight?

As long as they're not hardened up, you should be able to shake them. Another thread recommended using a case tumbler or vortex mixer to save the arm.

ah. you're just after a 1/4 to 3/8ths barb adapter. Use the black to connect to the faucet, use the blue and black tubes together with the barb adapter, use hoseclamps to secure the tubes.

http://www.amazon.com/Barb-Coupling-RF884/dp/B003BJ2EBA/ref=pd_sim_sbs_200_1?ie=UTF8&dpID=31694t8XXwL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=1DKKZ7PG1ZPAEA61NS1V

that sort of thing should do it. Use all the existing stuff from the old tap and hook the 3/8ths to the new 1/4.

I had a lab-mate who used to go on about how a caffeine addiction was 'the only good addiction'. This would usually happen at about 11:30, he was 4 energy drinks down and twitching as if he'd just sat on an oversized vortex shaker.

I love it when people provide the counter-argument to their own arguments.

This works well and so does this

u/totally78 · 1 pointr/Homebrewing

There are actually quite a few lower priced ones on Amazon. There are even comments about people using them for yeast starters.

I think you would also need something like this to be safe, but I am clearly no expert.

I've been a big fan of the Benchmark brand ones -- we have two with hotplates and several that are just plain stirrers.

u/abdada · 0 pointsr/DIY_eJuice

Do budget magnetic stir plates handle over 1 liter, though? The two that I've used would really choke even at 1L.

Looks like this one handles 5 liters, although who knows at VG viscosity. Still, it appears for $200 it's feasible!
