One day, by accident, you will find a really good dollar store for all the kitchen tools (measuring, peeling, etc).

Target >>> IKEA for setting the table.

I do have some splurges though...

I bought 2 Henkels knives open stock for $17 each (6 inch chefs and paring).

For cookware, I bought this for $160 3 years ago: http://www.amazon.com/Calphalon-DS9DC-Commercial-Hard-Anodized-Cookware/dp/B0007KQZ3O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1311483553&sr=8-1

I know this won't make it right but I own this same set. It comes cleaning instructions if you ever scorch a pan and we did it just to if it worked and it does! I've had these pans for almost 15 years now. Hopefully this helps you some. I second these. We replaced our aging Big Lots special set with these and they’re great. Really read the care sheet though. Not dishwasher friendly, but very easy to hand wash with Dawn and a sponge. If it’s still available online you can get a big set with some extras and a Google Home Mini.

Edit: Walmart no longer sells the big set, but Amazon does...at a premium. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KQCT6L4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Wsq5CbJ4XYDAB

2nd Edit: Wanted to share some care tips I’ve learned for non-stock pans. Let them cool before washing. I used to plunge hot pans into the sink immediately. Don’t. Rapid temperature changes damage the coating. Only use polymer or silicon utensils when cooking. Metal can scratch and gouge the lining. And don’t use heavily abrasive cleaning pads like SOS or steel wool. A basic sponge and soap will provide everything you need to clean a decent non-stick pan.

My cast iron pan, my Le Creuset dutch oven, and some GreenPan ceramic pans for everyday use.

This GreenPan set is really great and I love that it has glass lids. https://www.amazon.com/GreenPan-Chatham-ceramic-Non-Stick-Cookware/dp/B0722PMH3F?keywords=greenpan+set&qid=1540054781&s=Home+%26+Kitchen&sr=1-7&ref=sr_1_7

I'm in need of cookware. Pots and pans I suppose. I'm SUPER tired of having one of every brand spanning the last 20 years with no lids just floating around here. What's a decent brand that isn't going to run me $200 for stainless steel? I'm not a fan of teflon even without it being potentially toxic to my birds.

Recommendations? I like amazon, walmart, target, and kohls.

this seems nice

does copper bottoms make a difference?

Calphalon 9 piece set. It's awesome.

For me it was getting rid of all my gifted pots and pans, and buying a new set. They're stackable by design. And the handles nest neatly on top of each other. Saves space, but also saves a ton of frustration, because you know exactly where the thing you want, is.

I started with a set like this. And just got more as I felt the urge. Yeah, they're expensive. But having order where there was chaos is pretty nice.

I was reading the reviews on the Stansport set that was mentioned, and I saw where this Magma set was suggested. I like the idea of teflon coated for ease of cleaning.

My honest opinion: If you can read, you can cook. Literally. Basic cooking is simply reading instructions and following them. Once your comfortable with how things taste together, timing, and what spices taste like, then you can move on to more advanced dishes.

I think a fun part of learning to cook is gearing up. Since most people here will give you a grocery list, I'll give you a list of helpful items that I use daily.

  • 1 large, sharp kitchen knife and basic sharpener

The knife if a bit on the pricey side, but trust me when I tell you it's worth it. You only need 1 and as long as you hand wash and dry regularly, it can last forever. Sharp knives won't cut you as often as a dull knife that sometimes slips.

  • crock pot. This is good because it doesn't require any sort of culinary skills. Mostly just mix and wait.

  • Liquid Measuring cup

  • Dry measuring cups

  • Flat spatula

  • Other spatula (for stirring and wiping out sauces/batter/etc.)

  • Tongs

  • Very basic non-stick pots and pans I have a cheap set I bought from Costco that has lasted me 8 years and counting. Be sure to ALWAYS use wood or plastic utensils with non-stick or you risk scratching the non-stick surface and fucking it all up.

  • Wooden Utensils These are nice because you can leave them in a pot of sauce and not worry about them expelling chemicals or melting.

  • Also a holder for your kitchen items

I assume you have basic dishware and silverware, so I've only included common cooking items.

Hope this helps! I'll update if I can think of anything else you'll need.

Believe it or not those gimmicky red copper ones are pretty badass to the point that my wife made a grilled cheese in it last night burned the cheese to the pan and all it took was the sink sprayer to clean it off. To my knowledge they only have 3 right now a 10" deep pan that does like 4 different things a 10" frypan and a 12" skillet ranging from $20 - $60 but I think they're worth it

Edit ok they sell an entire set Now I kinda wanna get this set for me

Look. This set has what you need and will probably last you for a few years and it's less than $50. Tramontina is known for being decent quality for low prices.

Everyone has different ideas but this is a great starter set and a fantastic value.
