A stitch marker in your last stitch might help. I sometimes lose my place if I don’t use one.
DIYASY Knitting Stitch Markers Locking Stitch Counter 8 Colors with Container for Crochet Projects
For a crocheter- stitch markers are still nice (I like this style because they're easier to slip on and off of crochet stitches https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B06ZYCQHJB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_Sj47BbXC44YXK). Maybe some ergonomic hooks. Those are usually pretty nice to have. Yarn, obviously. Books. (If it's a younger person, a book on amigurumi might be nice)
Actually, there's a site called Knitpicks that's having a massive sale right now. They have a ton of decent yarn (I'd do at like four ball of one color unless you know what type of projects he/she prefers). They also have hooks and accessories. And books. You could probably get them a ton right now
Well this got a lot more attention than I expected. Quick list of everything in use - 1) TV1 = GH Track Android App for monster health and conditions, 2) TV2 = Gloomy Companion for monster ability cards, both are cast via chrome cast, 3) [Duchess Gaming Table] (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1296268806/the-duchess-a-gaming-table-from-boardgametablescom), 4) painted minis from /u/PintsizedProdigies, 5) Uberstax for the card holders, 6) 3-ring binder with fully sleeved items and ability cards, 7) Boye Knit Tally Counters for health and exp tracking, 8)Pathfinder Combat Pad for tracking initiative and 9) expanding accordion folder for organizing and storing map tiles. Think that's it. And I bought this house somewhat for this room, sunroom with 7 sliding glass doors.

I use the Namaste Oh Snap bags. Put your balls in, feed a single color in each gap, and snap closed. If you look at the "Crafter" picture you can see they've done it with one ball.

This can make a 33-36 inch long baby blanket. You have to put a peg in every other hole.
I have made 3 baby blankets using it. I make a long oval shape with it.
Oh, you'll love it. I bought these. Really inexpensive, extras in case you're like me and you misplace things, and there are two sizes, so you can't lose!
Nice!
I was about to suggest knitting counters, but they look (because they are!) cheap. Set has blue and red counters.

I got these hanging ones, and hang one from a chain:

I don't use scrap yarn for that either. I use dpns and just leave them on the other 2 needles. nothing falls off. You have made an ad hoc stitch holder. Congrats
So, suuuuuper late response, sorry!!!!
It's technically an afghan panel pattern, from a Provo Craft pamphlet. It's really easy, you do five rows
ABAB (5x)
CBCB (5x)
CDCD (5x)
ADAD (5x)
So each color gets ten rows, but they're staggered by five with each other.
Oh this is soooo much cuter than the giant awkward goofy fluorescent yellow digital one I use! Like this: https://www.amazon.com/Knitting-Crochet-Finger-Row-Counter/dp/B010IIZKP8/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?keywords=digital+row+counter&qid=1556329322&s=gateway&sr=8-2
